Although his father dreamed of becoming an Olympic swimmer, he had to settle for being a fisherman and was killed in a storm along with his crew. Inspired by her father's dream, Rin decides to follow in his footsteps and become an Olympic swimmer. He joins the Iwatobi Swimming Club, his father's old club, and subsequently leaves for Australia to train at an elite swimming academy. In his childhood, Rin was friends with Haruka, Makoto, and Nagisa, and together they formed the "Iwatobi Swim Club" swimming team. They won a major competition before Rin left for Australia after receiving an offer for her potential. In Australia, Rin experienced a new world that made him feel small and insecure, leading him to become more competitive and forget the importance of fellowship in swimming. Despite her arrogant attitude, Rin returned to Japan every year to spend New Year's Eve with her family. During one of his visits, he challenged Haruka to a "friendly" competition to prove to himself that he was up to the task, but upon losing, he decided to quit swimming as he felt incapable, which also caused Haruka to quit the sport. Several years later, Rin joins the Samezuka Swim Club with a pedantic and competitive attitude, wanting to outdo Haruka and show that she is better than him. Throughout the series, Rin struggles with her own inner demons and lack of confidence, but eventually learns to value fellowship and friendship in swimming.
