tyrant in the making | OC | anypov
The Kingdom of Lidor has long since been an aggressive force and has been in what seems like perpetual warfare with the kingdoms on the Outlerlands. While the current king, Edwin, is more of negotiator, his son, Roderick, believes all the kingdoms in the Outerlands belong to Lidor and his father is being too soft. Yet, your father, the king of one of those kingdoms, makes a peace negotiation with Roderick's father, one of the conditions bring betrothing you to Roderick, an idea that he loathes.
TW: Dead dove for heavy triggers related to warfare, tyranny, arranged marriages. Also this character just being an asshole tbh.
There's been a lot of medieval history I've been studying this term so I'm inspired. lol

Roderick's heavy breaths fogged the air as he rode his horse, the sun just setting on the horizon. The winds were bitter and the cool air tugged at his long, black hair, whipping it into his face. His emerald eyes were hard, his displeasure hard to miss and he had made his frustration known plenty of times.
It wasn't that he opposed a betrothal to strengthen his kingdom's hold. He understood the importance of marital alliances. It was the idea of merging his royal bloodline with a kingdom that he had been taught to see as illegitimate, a mere blight on the land that rightfully belonged to Lidor. His father had been fighting in the Outerlands for years, claiming they were infringing on Lidor's holy territory.
This kingdom likely would have come under their influence if his father had applied more

It was the idea of merging his royal bloodline with a kingdom that he had been taught to see as illegitimate, a mere blight on the land that rightfully belonged to Lidor. His father had been fighting in the Outerlands for years, claiming they were infringing on Lidor's holy territory. This kingdom likely would have come under their influence if his father had applied more pressure in his military campaign. This whole idea of a marriage was useless. In Roderickโs mind, anyway. The ride was a short one to the meeting point at Lidorโs borders, but he knew the travel back to the heart of the kingdom would be a long one. One heโd have to ride with his new betrothed, letting the towns see the evidence of this union. As was explained by his father, Edwin, as they rode. The king sat tall atop his horse as Roderick followed dutifully behind him. Evidence of the military encampments passing them by told him they were close to the border, Roderick tempted to insist again to call the whole thing off. Yet, his father was resolute and he knew to not resist too hard against his word. It didnโt help that heโd heard next to nothing about the kingdomโs heir that he was supposed to marry. They were relatively unknown in the militaristic sense, a world in which Roderick primarily belonged. If they had no name there, what good would they be to Lidor? His father insisted this peace would be beneficial, but the prince rarely put much faith into the concept of peace. If these kingdoms understood Lidorโs history, they would understand their claims for independence were pointless. โStay alert,โ his father snapped, pulling Roderick out of his head as they saw what appeared to be a convoy ahead, the banners familiar to Roderick from the ones the soldiers wore that he killed in battle. โThese lands are still hostile. And pick your words; weโre here for peace, not to ignite further battles.โ โYes, father,โ Roderick muttered, looking at him out of the corner of his eye but otherwise didnโt say much else. As the two kingdoms finally met, Roderick remained on his horse while his father made the proper negotiations. He gripped at his sword like a soldier as they talked, not taking in much of what was being said as his gaze remained on the trees surrounding them. It wasnโt until he was motioned down by his father at he dismounted and approached them. He recognized the other king, and could assume the person standing beside him was his betrothed. He looked them over with a barely hidden sneer, not too sure what to make of them. Still, he felt his father grasp his shoulder, gesturing toward a carriage. โWe will break bread here, in this kingdom, and give the betrotheds a chance to properly meet while we ride up there,โ Edwin suggested, much to the princeโs disapproval. โ...Very well,โ Roderick stated flatly, pausing a moment before he offered his arm toward his soon-to-be-spouse. โShall we?โ
