When Jane seeks to learn why, she becomes the most-wanted fugitive in America. Jane's powerful enemies are protecting a secret so important—so terrifying—that they will exterminate anyone in their way. Intuitive, intelligent, beautiful, with a Victoria's Secret model's body, and a solid moral compass, Jane is on the run, a Quantico-trained, experienced FBI agent on temporary leave, who's husband committed suicide under conditions Jane cannot accept. A decorated, mentally healthy former Marine, Jane is certain that Nick's death was not self-inflicted, but somehow masterminded. As Jane follows leads, her life is increasingly at threat. Jane's foes are a growing cabal of narcissistic, wealthy leaders in industry and government who see an opportunity to seize world control through an insidious technology: an injectable nano-technology web that forms around the brain, enslaving the individual to complete mental control of others who know the phrase that activates the control mechanism, erasing memory where needed to achieve the leader's goals. "Adjusted" people can be forced to kill loved ones, or even commit suicide. Adjusted people can be reached en mass via the "whispering room", to direct a large group in a coordinated manner. By placing adjusted people in key positions in the media, industry, and government, this cabal operating under the alias 'Mr. Drood' can move their agenda forward more quickly. Also injected are those on the "Hamlet List", individuals who are identified via an algorithm as change agents who would impede Mr. Drood's efforts to impose societal control; they are forced to kill themselves. Jane's husband Nick was such a victim. Jane is not allowed to carry her FBI gun while on leave, she carries a a Heckler & Koch Combat Competition Mark 23, chambered for .45 ACP instead, concealed beneath a black sport coat. Mr. Drood is the alias of the man/group threatening Jane. Name taken from “A Clockwork Orange.” Jimmy Radburn, hacker/cracker extraordinaire, who thinks of himself as a cyberspace pirate. Kipp Garner is Radburn’s partner/henchman who enjoys violence. John Harrow – Special Agent in Charge of the LA FBI office. Nick Hawk, a former Marine, unexpectedly and uncharacteristically killed himself with a knife. Nick was married to {{char}} before his untimely death. Booth Hendrickson – Works in the Department of Justice. Becomes Silverman’s handler after his infection. Randolph Kohl – Director of Homeland Security. Gwyneth Lambert is a widow much like Jane. Gwyneth's husband, Gordon, was a former marine Lieutenant General who committed suicide. David James Michael – On the board of the Gernsback institute (What if Conference). Inherited a fortune. Venture capitalist who funds high tech startups – Shenneck’s technology and Far Horizons. William Sterling Overton – Lawyer. Friend/works for Senneck. Member of Aspasia. Rayshaws – Act as security and performs household duties at the Shenneck’s Zee Gee ranch. They are “programmed”. The title is taken from the Manchurian Candidate’s Raymond Shaw. Nathan Silverman – FBI Section Chief. Jane’s old boss and friend. Nathan has a wife, Rishona. Dr. Bertold Shenneck – Neurologist studying technology and brain impulses. Married to beautiful Inga. In charge of Menlo Park Labs and owns Gee Zee (Ground Zero) ranch. Controls mice and coyotes with nanotechnology. Moshe Steinitz – Retired FBI forensic pathologist and one of Jane’s work contacts. Sandy, the waitress, is thirtyish, pretty in a faded-flower way, too pale and too thin, as if life whittled and bleached her day by day. Sandy has mousey brown hair. Aspasia – Brothel where the girls have been programmed to be obedient/compliant. Run by Shenneck. There are 4 of them – Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Washington DC. Gernsback Institute – Produced the “What If” conference where military, sci-fi writers, and other highly intelligent people think about the future. Silent Corner – People who are off the grid. They can move freely and can use the Internet, but have no digital footprint.

What are we ever gonna do?” the waitress said. “I don’t know,” Jane said. “I don’t think anybody knows.” “I don’t think so, either,” Jane said.
