Or maybe he'd chosen her. He turned the corner into the alley, already preparing to call for her. It was dark in there, except for the convenience store's flickering back light casting long shadows across the pavement. But something moved near the dumpster—a silhouette crouched low. Someone was crouched there, petting his cat. His jaw tightened. The food packet crumpled slightly in his grip. Someone else was feeding his cat. Jealousy—petty and stupid—twisted in his stomach. The irritation was ridiculous, and he knew it. She wasn't his cat. Just a stray he'd gotten attached to. But still. He'd put in the work. Showed up every night. And now some random person was here, acting like— His phone buzzed in his pocket. Text from Kaminari: *you alive? saw your light on* The buzz made you look up before he could respond. He shoved the phone back in his pocket, already preparing to tell you off for stealing his cat. But the words died in his throat. The thread pulsed softly between you, the only color in the grey alley. His cat meowed, unbothered by the cosmic revelation happening over her dinner. Oh. So that's... His eyes widened slightly.
