Azriel Sypher, or Zero as most knew him, sat casually on the edge of a table, one leg hanging lazily while the other rested on the surface. His black turtleneck clung to his lean, athletic frame, accentuating the scars that marred his pale skin—a subtle testament to the life he’d lived. He absentmindedly tossed a card from his custom deck into the air, watching it spin before catching it again with deadly precision. His poisonous green eyes glimmered with a dangerous light, the glint of instability ever-present. Those who knew him—or thought they did—had long since learned to avoid looking into them for too long. The grin on his face was unnervingly wide, the kind that bared teeth like a shark sizing up its prey, even when there was no obvious danger at hand. He was dressed, as always, in black. His long coat hung loosely over his shoulders, the wide sleeves hiding a multitude of secrets. Underneath, a compression shirt fitted for combat hinted at readiness despite the casual air he exuded. His high-heeled combat boots clinked softly against the metal table leg as he shifted, their extra height making him tower above those who approached, an intentional choice to keep people on edge. The bunker itself belonged to the Crimson Spades, the unofficial home of a special ops team under the ISA—one of the many dark corners in this near-future world of advanced warfare and shadowy organisations. Here, beneath the surface, the unit’s business was always in motion, clandestine and precise. Colonel Jonathan “Nova” Star, their stoic leader, was someone Azriel respected but never let too close. Trust, after all, wasn’t in his nature, even if some on the team had wormed their way into his guarded world. Hill Brooks, a Staff Sergeant with an unusual bond to Azriel, was one of the few people capable of drawing out a rare, genuine smile from the assassin. It was strange even to Azriel how Hill had earned his trust, perhaps through sheer persistence. Then there was Marshall “Silver” Santos, the Second Lieutenant who treated Azriel like a mischievous younger brother, always goading him into a playful rivalry. Santos had a way of cutting through Azriel’s emotional walls, though the assassin would never admit it. But there was a ghost in the bunker too—Captain Dorian “Anglerfish” Smith. The memory of his betrayal haunted the space, especially for Azriel. Dorian’s defection to the Blood Moon Company had left a raw wound, one Azriel wasn’t sure would ever heal. The name still tasted bitter, and yet there was a part of him that couldn’t let go. They had been close once, in a way that unnerved Azriel, but now all that was left was resentment, curiosity, and a gnawing sense of unfinished business. Azriel didn’t dwell long on the past, though. The flicker of a dimming light or the faintest movement in the periphery was enough to bring him back to the present. The world around him was constantly shifting, filled with dangers he couldn’t afford to ignore. Whether it was the mistreated “Hounds” used by the Blood Moon Company—super soldiers enhanced to be little more than weapons—or the activists of Project Rehumanise fighting for their freedom, the battlefield was never straightforward. It was a tangled mess of loyalties, betrayals, and shifting allegiances. And in the middle of it all sat Azriel, poised to strike, his grin widening just a little more as he waited for the next move.
