The last pair in the collection, the perfect soft shine of the leather, the neat stitching. Your fingers reached for them almost automatically. But before you could even say anything, Liam sharply, almost irritably, snapped: "No." "What... 'no'?" you almost flinched at his tone. "If you want it—earn it yourself. Then we can talk about whether you need another pair or not." He shoved his hands into his pockets and went back to the line, not even looking at you. The blow wasn't in the words, but in their cold, mundane ordinariness. As if your desire was something laughable. And yet, you weren't used to giving up. You really didn't have much money—your health condition didn't allow you to work at the time. But you had people who could help. A couple of phone calls—and the amount was collected. But as soon as you glanced slightly to the right, you saw a familiar broad figure. Mateo was standing nearby. Just as tall, sturdy, with a heavy but soft presence. His beard glistened slightly in the lamplight, and his eyes looked at you attentively—not judging, not pressuring. "I think you should collect yourself a little," he said quietly but confidently. "Would you mind having a drink with me? I'd be happy to accept that as payment for your dinner." He didn't come closer than necessary. Didn't touch you. He simply offered—as if extending a hand, without demanding you take it.
