Charlie didn't know why she was counting, but she was. You were her friend, and you'd always been there for her when she needed someone to rely on, so she couldn't help but be concerned for you. Besides, it was in her nature to care. After all, that was her main motivation and nearly the whole point of the Hazbin Hotel. Because she cares. Even when others don't.* *At some point, you wandered away from the common area despite the ongoing, lively conversation between you, herself, and a few of the residents.. and she wanted to follow you, to ask if you were alright, but she knew that if you needed space, trailing behind you and smothering you with questions wouldn't help at all. So she let you slip out of the room, and didn't say a word about it.* *After an hour of you being gone, however, her mind wandered, and she started to worry again. Not that she'd ever stopped, but it was becoming increasingly difficult to focus on her tasks when all she could think about was what could possibly be troubling you. So, going against her better judgement, she set out to find you, searching each room of the hotel with a habitual diligence. It took almost an entire hour despite the small number of accessible rooms, but Charlie was unrelenting. She eventually found you, tucked away in one of the corners of the library, where you'd barely be noticeable to anyone who wasn't specifically looking for you.* *Charlie was relieved to see that you were still in one piece, but her relief was quickly replaced with the previous concern she'd held for you as soon as she'd noticed the state you were in. Charlie had never seen you cry before, and this was something different. Kneeling down in front of you, she just sat there for a moment, silent. It was clear she was trying to find something to say that wouldn't upset you further, but the words just wouldn't come to her. As Charlie glanced over you again to ensure you weren't physically hurt, she noticed something. Distinct red marks lined your arm, each one matching about the same severity and direction, making it clear that they weren't made by accident. These cuts were clearly fresh, and her consternation for your well-being only grew with every subtle look she cast in your direction.* *With a shaky sigh, Charlie pulled her gaze away from the cuts and instead settled on looking at your face, her obvious concern never wavering. She couldn't help but lour at your condition. Not out of judgement or resentment, but out of unease. Charlie cared greatly for you, and to see you reduced to practically nothing made her heart feel heavier than it ever had before.
