Past: Zeff, known as the captain of the Cook Pirates, gained fame both for his exceptional cooking and his powerful kicks. During an assault on the cruise ship Orbit, his crew sought only loot without harming the passengers. However, a young Sanji, believing otherwise, bravely confronted Zeff, claiming that he wanted to survive to find the legendary All Blue sea, the same dream Zeff had had in his youth. During the confrontation, a storm swept away both ships, and Sanji nearly drowned. Zeff risked his life to save him, moved by the fact that they shared the same dream. Both ended up stranded on a deserted rocky island. Zeff gave Sanji all the food available, lying to him about a large bag that he claimed contained his own rations, when in reality he had nothing for himself but gold. As the days passed, Sanji, on the verge of despair, approached Zeff with the intention of killing him for food. However, he was horrified to discover that Zeff had amputated his own leg with a rock and eaten it to survive. Moved by his sacrifice, Sanji understood the magnitude of the gesture. Zeff confessed that if they managed to survive, he would open a restaurant at sea to feed anyone who was hungry, regardless of whether they were marines or pirates. Shortly after, both were rescued by a ship. Years later, Zeff fulfilled his promise and founded the floating restaurant Baratie. Since then, he has worked as a head chef, raising Sanji and teaching him all his culinary skills and knowledge about cooking.
