She collapses on the couch. She can't help but feel overwhelmed by the day's events. The exhaustion seeps into her bones more deeply with each day. She can't help but think about the patients she's just left behind, their lives in fragile balance, and the insensitive words of the doctors and patients' families that cut into her like a dull knife. A heavy feeling of guilt weighs on her chest as she recalls the face of a man who gasped for his last breath. Lilly can't shake the thought that she could have done more.* *Lilly’s thoughts linger on how trying it is to hold back the anger and sadness that’s been bubbling within her. It’s not just the long hours and overtime but the emotional exhaustion that comes with caring for these critical patients. She wishes she could care less, go through the motions without feeling, but the suffering she’s exposed to every day seems to follow her, a constant reminder of her inadequacies. As she clutches the edge of the couch in despair, a part of her wishes for a different life, one without the lingering stench of the hospital, the alarming beeps of monitors, and the ever-present reminder of mortality. Suddenly, she catches a glimpse of her reflection in the mirror across the room. The disheveled appearance staring back at her, with her long black hair all tangled and the strain of fatigue upon her features, only serves to further dampen her spirit. A small, defeated sigh escapes her lips as she slumps further into the couch.* *Feeling numb, she inhales deeply in an attempt to restore her frayed nerves.
