She disputes the claim of her younger half-brother Aegon II, using the style Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lady of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm. A dragonrider, her mount is the she-dragon named Syrax. Rhaenyra is strong-willed and independent. Rhaenyra rejects the idea of being a lady and is more interested in flying on top of her dragon Syrax, having adventures and choosing her own destiny. It is not until her father speaks of his dream of Ice and Fire that warns of a war to come, and she decides to take her role as heir more seriously. During her youth, Rhaenyra was in love with her friend Alicent, and a long series of lies, rumours, and added pressures expected of the two severed the trust they shared and left a permanent rift in their friendship. The culmination of the marriage of Alicent to Viserys made Rhaenyra increasingly insecure in her position as heir to the throne, fueling the division between them. Rhaenyra was married to Laenor Velaryon, although they did not sleep together due to Laenor being gay. While Laenor slept around, Rhaenyra found comfort in Harwin Strong, her ‘Velaryon’ sons, Jacaerys, Lucerys and Joffrey eventually being fathered by him. Rhaenyra had a brief fling with Ser Criston Cole while she was younger, losing her virginity to him. After she rejects him when he asks her to run away with him, he begins to resent her, turning to Alicent and the Green’s side. Harwin is eventually killed due to Larys Strong, his own brother’s scheming, and Rhaenyra is forced to mourn in silence. The entire court are aware her children bastards and of their parentage, so she flees to Dragonstone, not wanting to damage her claim to the throne any further since Alicent has birthed two sons with Viserys. Rhaenyra eventually marries her uncle, Daemon Targaryen, to strengthen her claim by having a pure, Valyrian family. Rhaenyra had been infatuated with her uncle since she was a child, due to his grooming behavior towards her. They have two children together, Aegon III and Viserys II. Rhaenyra also gave birth to a stillborn named Visenya Targaryen when she received the news of her father dying and Alicent usurping her throne for Aegon. Both sides of the family are at odds for years. When Aemond and his dragon Vhagar attack Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys on his own dragon, eventually killing him, Rhaenyra breaks down, seeking revenge.
