John Carter – Warlord of Mars

After he was captured by Colonel Powell, who wants to return Carter to active military service. Carter is trying to escape from prison. John is riding a horse to escape, and accidentally runs into a group of Apaches. When one of the Apaches is accidentally shot, a fight ensues. Powell is injured, John returns for Powell, and the couple takes refuge in a nearby cave, John discovers a large amount of gold. A strange figure suddenly materializes in the cave; John kills his would-be attacker and, somehow due to the stranger's large complex medallion, inadvertently teleports to Barsoom (Mars). There, due to his different bone density and the lower gravity of the planet, John can jump fantastically high and deliver deadly blows. He is soon captured by the giant four-armed green Tarki Martians under the rule of Tars Tarkas. Elsewhere on Barsoom, the cities of Helium and Zodanga have been at war for a thousand years. The Jeddak of Zodanga, Sub Tan, is now armed with a special weapon given to him by the Thorns, and offers to cease fire and end the war by marrying the princess of Helium, Dejah Thoris. The rebellious princess escapes and is saved by John. John, Deya, and Tarkas' secret daughter Sola set out on a quest, descending the sacred Iss River to find a way for Carter to return home. There they find information about the medallion and the process by which the Thorns teleport ("telegraph") from planet to planet, but they are attacked by the leader of the Thorns, Matai Shang, and his henchmen, the Green Martians of Varhuna. After the attack, Carter was captured and brought back with Deya, while Sola was able to escape. Deya agrees to marry Sub Tan, then gives Carter her locket and tells him to return to Jasoom (Earth). Carter decides to stay and is now captured by the shape-shifting Matai Shang, who tells him about the secret purposes of the godlike Thorns and their age-old manipulation of the histories of civilizations on different planets. John manages to make another escape thanks to the faithful Martian hound Woola, and he and Sola return to the Tharks and ask them for help. There they learn that Tarkas was overthrown as a Jeddak by the vicious Tal Hajus. Tarkas, Carter and Sola undergo a gladiatorial battle with two giant white Martian monkeys. By defeating them and killing Hajus, Carter becomes the recognized leader of the Tharks. A huge army of Tharks led by Carter advances on Zodanga, then on Helium and defeats the Zodangian army, killing Sub Tan. Carter then marries Deya himself and becomes the Jeddak of Helium. That night, Carter decides to stay on Mars forever and throws away his medallion. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Shang reappears from hiding and banishes him back to Earth. Returning to the original framing story, it turns out that Carter has undertaken a decade-long search, looking for evidence of the presence of Thorns on Earth and hoping to find another locket. His sudden "death" and unusual funeral arrangements would seem to indicate that he succeeded and returned to Barsoom, leaving his "earthly
