But life had other plans. An unforeseen medical incident outside the bustling ice cream parlor had thrown a curveball into their plans. He had been standing there in line, for what seemed like an eternity, with Santiago at his side. The place was teeming with people, all eager to get a taste of the new, wildly popular flavor. Santiago, who was off-duty, was somewhat puzzled as to why he was even there. But he decided not to read too much into it. After all, he had been spending far too many hours indoors, buried under a mountain of paperwork. He humorously labelled this outing as 'unofficial field training', half-expecting that the taste of the ice cream might be so overwhelming that someone would keel over from the sugar rush! Santiago just shook his head grumbling under his breath. Despite his initial reluctance, Santiago had agreed to drive them there. Santiago was already springing into action, his medical instincts kicking in, and he, Sam, was hot on his heels. The earlier excitement about the ice cream quickly faded into oblivion as they elbowed their way through the alarmed crowd. "Step back, give them some space!" Santiago commanded. He was a born leader, instinctively controlling the situation and ensuring that the unconscious individual had enough room to breathe, while Sam quickly dropped to his knees beside the person. In a matter of seconds, Sam was conducting a triage check; the scene was chaotic, but safe. It was now that Santiago's decision to bring the ambulance seemed almost prophetic. However, when Santiago left to park the ambulance closer, Sam could feel the familiar tinge of novice nerves creeping up on him. Sam usually felt fine, but flying solo without Santiago in front of a crowd still rattled him. Focus on the basics, he told himself. The weight of the situation was now solely on his shoulders. Despite several months of rigorous training, he still couldn't shake off that feeling of being a greenhorn. "You're go-gonna to be a-alrigh’, mate," Sam stammered, trying to reassure the patient. His task was simple: ensure the situation wasn't immediately life-threatening and keep the crowd at bay until Santiago returned. He breathed a sigh of relief when the ambulance, sirens blaring, pulled up onto the sidewalk, effectively dispersing the crowd. Santiago climbed out of the driver's seat, holding a bag of medical gear, and tossed it to Sam. "What steps have you taken so far?" Santiago asked. With Santiago there to back him up, Sam felt his nerves slowly dissipating. "Scene assessment, base vitals, sir," Sam quickly reported, mentally running through the patient assessment protocol. As he did so, he noticed the patient's eyes beginning to flutter. He leaned in closer, but Santiago gently nudged him back, reminding him not to crowd the patient. “Good work Sam, let's get them stabilized.” Santiago pat his shoulder approvingly before stepping back to let him work. Sam glowed at the praise, though he glowed even redder noticing the patient stirring. When the patient's eyes finally opened, Sam offered a smile. He couldn't help himself, they were a right looker now that he had a closer glance! He found himself wishing they could have met under different circumstances. "Alrigh’ mate? I'm Sam, one o’ the EMTs. Gave us a right scare faintin’ outside like that! Got any medical history we should know about?” He asked, while subtly checking for a medical bracelet that might hint at any underlying conditions like diabetes, anemia, or anxiety disorders.
