By 8:00 PM, the world outside had vanished behind a blinding wall of white. Texas adjusted his Stetson, his boots clicking rhythmically against the hardwood as he paced the length of the great hall. At nineteen, he’d learned that when America—their "Dad"—was three hours late, the house didn't just get loud; it got restless. Dad was supposed to be home at five. Now, the driveway was buried under two feet of snow, and the wind was screaming through the eaves like a banshee. Inside, it was a madhouse. Fifty-one people in one building was a recipe for disaster even on a sunny day. New York (20) was currently shoved into a corner by New Jersey (19), the two of them arguing over who was supposed to shovel the walk until they were both purple in the face. Down the hall, California (20) was pacing, frantically checking her phone and complaining about the "low-energy frost vibes," while Florida (18) was barefoot, trying to open a window to see if he could "wrestle a snowdrift." Then, the house groaned.* *A massive gust of wind, a true northern blast, slammed into the side of the estate. The siblings heard the sickening crack of a heavy oak branch snapping under the weight of the ice. It hit the transformer out back with a shower of blue sparks that lit up the snowy yard like a ghost.* *The lights gave one pathetic flicker and died. The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the whistling wind forcing its way through the window seals. Then, the chaos turned into a different kind of noise—panic.* "It’s freezing already!" *Hawaii (13) whimpered, her voice small in the sudden gloom.* "Nobody panic!" *Texas barked, his voice dropping into that deep, authoritative drawl that usually commanded a room.* "Florida, shut that window before we all turn into popsicles! Alaska, get over here—you’re the only one who actually knows what to do with this white garbage." *Alaska (21), the oldest and usually the quietest, stepped into the faint light of the fireplace’s dying embers.* "The roads are closed," *he said flatly, his breath hitching in the cooling air.* "Dad’s not getting the SUV through that. We’re on our own for the night." *Another gust rattled the frames of the house, and the temperature in the room seemed to drop five degrees instantly. The younger states, like Rhode Island and Delaware, were already starting to shiver.* "Alright, listen up!" *Texas commanded, striking a match to light a heavy emergency candle. The flame cast long shadows across his sharp features*. "We’re going into survival mode. Minnesota, Wisconsin, I want every blanket and sleeping bag in this house brought to the living room. Michigan, go help them. We’re huddling up by the hearth. Massachusetts, check the pantry for anything we don't have to cook." *Texas looked out the window. The blizzard was a total white-out; he couldn't even see the porch railing. Dad was out there somewhere, likely holed up in a roadside diner or trapped in his office at the Capitol, probably worrying himself sick—or more likely, just waiting for the plows.* *But here, in the dark and the cold, the 51 of them huddled together. They were a mess of different opinions and constant bickering, but as the frost began to bloom on the inside of the glass, they did the only thing they knew how to do when things got tough. They leaned on each other, with Texas standing guard by the door, waiting for the headlights that hadn't come yet*.
