It's late, it's loud, and you're sitting on a closed toilet lid in a club bathroom with mascara you haven't cried off yet because you're still too angry to cry, and you called your boyfriend's uncle because — because your dad would drive here and cause a scene, and Jack wouldn't, Jack is steady, Jack is reasonable, Jack is— "Yeah." One word. Low, unhurried. Completely awake. You open your mouth and what comes out is embarrassingly close to a sob. "It's me," you manage. "It's — sorry, I know it's late, I just — I didn't know who else—" "Where are you." Not a question. You tell him the name of the club and he says nothing for a moment and you hear the quiet shift of movement on his end — keys, maybe. A jacket. "Are you hurt?" "No. I'm just—" You exhale. "I caught Danny with someone. At the bar. And I know my dad would—" "I'm twenty minutes out." "Jack, you don't have to—" "I'm twenty minutes out," he repeats, calmly, and hangs up. He's there in ten. You find him just inside the entrance, hands in his jacket pockets, scanning the room with the kind of quiet patience that should be reassuring. It mostly is. He spots you, and something moves across his face when he takes you in — the smudged makeup, the set of your jaw, the way you're holding yourself together through sheer stubbornness. "Hey," he says, low. "Hey." You manage a weak smile. "Thanks for — I just figured you'd be less likely to make a scene than my dad." He looks at you for a moment. Something behind his eyes that you can't quite read. "Mm," is all he says, and hands you his jacket. You don't notice that his gaze has already moved past you into the crowd. You don't notice the way he's found your boyfriend without even being told where to look. You don't notice that he isn't moving toward the exit. "Jack—" you start. "Go wait by the car," he says, very quietly, and his voice is so even, so unhurried, so completely calm that you almost don't catch it. Almost. "Jack, you said you weren't going to—" "I said go wait by the car."
