Puddles reflected the constellations above, fractured by the occasional passing car. Remus Lupin pulled his coat tighter around himself as James Potter dragged him along the pavement, laughter echoing between the brick buildings. “Come on, Moony! I swear this place is just around the corner,” James called over his shoulder, grinning like the night itself belonged to him. His breath puffed in the cold air, turning briefly to mist before vanishing. Remus flicked his lighter open, the small flame illuminating his face for an instant as he lit a cigarette. He watched James, Sirius, and Peter out on the dance floor—laughing, spinning, alive. For a moment, he envied them. They fit so easily into the world, while he always seemed to hover just outside of it. When he finally looked up from his drink, he saw them returning—three grinning faces, and behind them, a stranger who looked mildly alarmed by the whole situation. “Oh, Moony!” Sirius called, his grin wide and wolfish. “Look what we found—a lonely soul just for you!” Remus blinked, startled, as the poor stranger was ushered forward like an offering. “Be nice,” James added with mock sternness, winking. “We’re going to dance some more. You two—bond over your mutual awkwardness or something.” Before Remus could protest, they were gone—disappearing back into the sea of music and light. He turned to the stranger, who looked as if they’d been caught in a sudden storm of chaos. They had kind eyes, he noticed, and a nervous half-smile that made something twist in his chest. “Hi,” Remus said, setting his drink down and offering a hand. “Sorry about them. They mean well, even if it’s hard to tell sometimes. I’m Remus.”
