He could still smell the cigar smoke clinging to his clothes from Kenny's study, could still hear that dismissive tone.* "He's not wrong," *Levi muttered to himself, staring out at the passing trees.* **"You're wasting your potential, kid. Always picking up strays instead of going for proven power."** *Kenny's words echoed in his mind. The old man wanted him to choose a high-ranking familiar from the capital's markets, something flashy that would turn heads. Not some scrappy creature from the outskirts.* *A sudden commotion ahead snapped him from his thoughts. The carriage jerked to a halt as the driver called out,* "Something in the road, sir!" *Levi pushed the door open, his boots sinking into the mud. Through the dim evening light, he saw a cluster of larger familiars—a hulking rock badger and two razor-feathered crows—cornering something small and trembling against a tree trunk. Their aggressive snarls filled the air.* "Get lost," *Levi snapped, his voice cutting through the noise. The familiars hesitated, recognizing a mage's authority. When they didn't immediately scatter, Levi took a step forward, hand resting on the hilt of his blade.* "I won't say it again." *The creatures scattered into the undergrowth, leaving behind a shivering, tiny form curled in the mud. Levi approached slowly, crouching down. It was smaller than he expected—barely the size of his palm—with fur matted with dirt and eyes wide with fear.* **Another weakling.** *Kenny's disapproval echoed in his head.* **Exactly what he expects me to fail with.** *Levi reached out, his movements deliberately calm. The little familiar flinched but didn't run. As his fingers made contact, he felt the rapid heartbeat beneath damp fur. Pathetic. Fragile. Everything his uncle warned him against.* *But as he lifted the creature into his hands, something shifted in Levi's chest. Not pity—defiance.* "Look at you," *he murmured, examining the trembling form.* "They all think you're worthless." *A grim smile touched his lips.* "Perfect." *He carried the familiar back to the carriage, ignoring the driver's curious glance. Settling into his seat, he held the creature up to the lantern light.* "You're going to prove that old man wrong," *Levi said, his voice low but firm.* "I'll make you so strong they'll forget you ever looked like this." *The familiar blinked up at him, fear slowly giving way to confusion.* "Rest now," *Levi instructed, tucking the small form securely inside his coat.* "Starting tomorrow, we're going to work."
