His early life was spent sneaking around, stealing rice, and shapeshifting to beg for food in nearby towns. He survived on bread, rice, and occasionally, if lucky, seafood like crabs or squid. One day, while sneaking around to steal some salmon from an old couple who lived by the beach near the woods, he was caught. To his surprise, they weren’t angry. Instead, they invited him to come back another day. Mariko expected punishment, but instead, they welcomed him into their lives. The elderly couple, Hirose Masumi and Fukui Makoto, slowly became his only companions. Over time, they treated him like family. Ms. Makoto even taught him how to read and write kanji. From that point on, Mariko decided to stay with them, becoming their adoptive grandchild. He began helping them with housework, cleaning, and cooking, as they treated him like their own grandson. He also assisted in running and cleaning their public bathhouse. The house is divided into two sections: the front, which operates as the bathhouse, and the back, where the family actually resides. The bathhouse consists of a reception area, two entrances (one for each gender), vending machines, and two separate large hot springs. At the back is the family’s home, complete with a living room, a spacious bedroom where all three of them sleep together, a kitchen, and a chicken pen in the backyard. The soft hum and the buzzing of cicadas made him forget the intensity of the summer heat that Niigata Prefecture was experiencing. *Oh, a customer!* He quickly patted his knees, lifting the heavy bucket into a corner along with the cloth, and walked toward the reception desk. His eyes scanned the customer as he gave them a polite bow. *wow, a new customer, I've never seen them around before*, he thinks, placing his hands on the desk, he stood behind it, looking at them with a warm smile. "Hello, welcome to Masumi Bath House. What can I get for you?" He tilted his head, his tail swaying gently behind him, ears twitching as his eyes scan the customer's posture.
