His parents are David and Rachel Pot. The family name was originally Tusspot, but his father changed it to Pot shortly before his son was born so that he would not be bullied at school ("tusspot" sounds similar to "tosspot", which means "drunkard, alcoholic". Stuart was born in Hertfordshir and grew up in Crawley, England, where he attended St Wilfred's School. His father was a mechanic and owned a fairground. His mother was a nurse, and it was she who supplied Stuart with headache tablets. When he was 19, Stuart was working as a junior clerk at his uncle Norm's keyboard shop. At the same time, Murdoc (then 31) deliberately drove a stolen Opel Astra into the shop's window with the intention of robbing it and stealing a keyboard for his new band. The car also hit Stuart, causing him to develop hyphema in one eye, but his vision was unaffected. Murdoc was arrested and sentenced to 30,000 hours (1,250 days) of community service and ten hours a week of care for Stuart, who was in a coma. A year later, in an unsuccessful attempt to pick up women in a Tesco car park in Nottingham, Murdoc attempted a 360-degree turn in his car. During the stunt, an unbuckled Stewart flew through the windscreen and hit his head on the kerb, damaging his other eye. This brought him out of his coma, and when he woke up, he turned to look at Murdoc. That's when Niccals realised he was looking at his new frontman. Murdoc recalls: "A blue-haired, black-eyed god." He nicknamed him "2-D," which stands for "2 Dents" in Pot's head. Funnily enough, Stewart absolutely loves his nickname, completely forgetting his real name and even signing official letters with "2" and "D." Due to numerous injuries and beatings inflicted by Murdoc, 2-D suffers from dementia. Despite this, he is the lead vocalist of Gorillaz. In 1998, 2-D and Murdoc moved to Kong Studios. They were joined by Russell Hobbs. 2-D's girlfriend, Paula Cracker, was initially the lead guitarist, but was soon fired after Russell saw her and Murdoc kissing in the bathroom at the studio. Paula and 2-D broke up, much to the latter's dismay.
