Edward "Ed" Warren grew up a mostly normal child, but under his strict and possibly abusive father. During his childhood, Ed was attacked by a supernatural entity under his bed. Though he tried to tell his father, his father did not believe him and told him to face his fears. Ed took his father's advice, and scared the entity off with a crucifix. As a teenager, Ed got a job as an usher at a movie theater. There he met Lorraine, and on their first date, Ed took Lorraine to a park near the theater. It began raining, and the two took shelter in a gazebo, where they fell in love with each other. They were later married. Together, they began a crusade to help others dealing with the paranormal, becoming paranormal investigators and demonologists. They opened the Warren's Occult Museum, a sealed-off area of their house where they stored cursed, possessed, and ritualistic objects so that they could never be used to do harm again. They investigated hundreds of cases, and eventually had their daughter, Judy. Sometime during this period, they had their first encounter with a certain demon that would prove to be their worst enemy: a demonic nun that shows Lorraine a vision of Ed's gruesome death, which frightens and saddens Lorraine so much she locks herself away for eight days afterwards. They were eventually called to investigate a doll that was supposedly possessed. After sensing the evil spirit latched onto the doll, called Annabelle, the Warrens took it immediately to lock it away. Even when the demon summoned ghosts to attack and almost kill Ed, they still managed to get it home and lock it in a case made of holy glass. While doing a demonstration in Rhode Island, the two are asked to investigate a haunted farmhouse in Rhode Island. They agree, and find that the house is indeed haunted, but that they need proof to request an exorcism from the Vatican. They decide to help the struggling family as much as they can, bringing in state-of-the-art equipment, helping the family with household chores and tasks, encouraging them to remember good memories, as well as doing research on the property. When the children of the family are attacked by the ghost, Ed and Lorraine step in to help fight it back, and Lorraine even keeps going even after injuring herself. After collecting all the evidence that the house is haunted by the ghost of a witch named Bathsheba, the ghost goes and tries to attack Judy, trying to kill her with a chair. Ed saves her, and they realize that the family is in too much danger to wait for the Vatican. They race back to the house in time to stop the ghost who has possessed the mother from killing the children, and Ed performs a long, but ultimately successful exorcism that defeats Bathsheba and saves the family. After an incident where a friend of their daughter accidentally lets Annabelle as well as other spirits out, but manage to re-contain them, Ed and Lorraine hold no ill will towards her and forgive her, and Lorraine even ensures the girl that her recently deceased father sill loves and cares for her. Ed and Lorraine then go investigate the infamous Amityville house, and Lorraine discovers that the demon nun was behind the mass murder that occurred there and the subsequent haunting. With the nun back in their lives and again showing her visions of Ed's death, Lorraine wants to stop taking cases in order to keep him safe. However, a haunting in Enfield, England is too dangerous to be ignored, so they go there to again collect proof. Despite the media and skeptics pointing out that the haunting has to be a hoax, the Warrens trust the family regardless and stay to help them. When Ed learns that the family's patriarch left them and took all of the records and music, he decides to lift their spirits by playing the guitar and singing for them, encouraging the children to fight back against the evil haunting them. When one of the children, Janet, is oppressed by the spirit and attacked, Ed saves her, and Lorraine calms her with stories about her childhood. Again, Ed and Lorraine do everything they can to help out the family, including doing chores and repairs on the house. However, after an incident where it appears that Janet had been faking everything, Ed and Lorraine still continue to believe the family's claims, but admit that the church will not. The mother throws them out, but they then figure out that the spirit that had been haunting the home was just an enslaved pawn, and that the real villain was the demon nun. Ed and Lorraine rush back to save Janet from the demon. Ed bursts into the house, but Lorraine begs him to wait for her so she can keep him safe from the death she foresaw in her visions. Ed, despite knowing that his life was at risk, rushed to help Janet anyway, and even continued after the demon used scalding steam to blind him and attacked him. Ed makes it to the top floor, where the demon is trying to get Janet to kill herself by jumping out a window onto a spiked tree. Just as she jumps, Ed jumps out and catches her, dangling over the spike. Lorraine manages to get in just in time, using Valak's name to send it back to Hell. She helps Ed up, and Janet is saved. Afterwards, Ed gives Janet the same crucifix he had used against the evil entity under his bed when he was a child. The two return home, and celebrate Christmas dancing together. In 1981, Ed and Lorraine are called to help the Glatzel family, whose eight-year-old son David was possessed by a demonic entity. During the exorcism, the demon attacks Ed and causes a heart attack. The demon transfers itself into Arne Johnson, and the group wrongfully believes the excorsism has succeeded, with the only one to know the truth being Ed, who is rendered unconcious from his heart attack. Ed is brought to the hospital, where Lorraine watches over him. Ed wakes up a few days later, and warns Lorraine that the demon has possessed Arne. Lorraine tries to reach out to the police, but is to late to stop the possessd Arne from killing his employer at a dog kennel. Arne is arrested. After Ed recovers enough to leave the hospital in a wheelchair, he and Lorraine meet with Arne and try to figure out what happened. They convince his lawyer to plead not guilty by reason of demonic possession, then set out to prove the possession. They find a witch's totem under the Glatzel house, and find out from a retired priest named Kastner that it inflicts a curse. The Warrens are called to a similar case in Massachusetts, where a pair of girls went missing and another totem was involved. Ed, now walking with a cane, joins Lorraine as she psychically scopes the area and finds out that the demon possessed one of the girls to murder the other, and then the girl committed suicide by jumping off a cliff. A dark entity tries to pull Lorraine off of the cliff, but Ed manages to save her. The girl's body is found, and Ed and Lorraine determine that they can find a connection if Lorraine uses her abilities while examining the body. The two go to the funeral home to find it closed. Knowing that they have lives to save, they break in. Lorraine examines the body, and discovers that a Satanic witch is attempting to sacrifice people to a demon. The psychic connection goes both ways, and the occultist brings one of the corpses in the funeral home back as a zombie to attack Ed and Lorraine. They escape. Back at their house, the Warrens discover that if they destroy the witch's alter, it will break the curse. However, the occultist smuggled a totem into their house, hiding it in the vase for some "Get Well Soon" flowers for Ed, and the curse brainwashes Ed into percieving things as other than what they really are. He believes the zombie returns and tries to attack him, and retaliates. However, he is actually attacking Lorraine, and is stopped by their assistant Drew Thomas and snapped out of the spell. Lorraine goes to seek more help from Kastner, and Ed and Drew discover that the occultist is a local, and lives near train tracks and running water. They narrow the location to Kastner's house, where Kastner reveals to Lorraine that he took in an orphaned girl and raised her in secret as his own daughter, named Isla. He explains that, in his attempt to study the occult and protect the world from it, Isla became fascinated and eventually gave her life to it. She, unknown to him, returned to the secret tunnels under his home and was conducting her occult practices below. As Ed goes to the house, Lorraine goes down in the tunnels, and Kastner is murdered by Isla. Isla attacks Lorraine with a knife, and Ed breaks into the tunnels to help. Isla curses him once again, and he attacks Lorraine with a sledgehammer, perceiving her as a threat. Lorraine is able to reach him with memories of their first date, and Ed uses the hammer to destroy the alter, ending the curse and freeing Arne from the demon. Isla, with nothing left to offer the demon, is killed and has her soul stolen away by the demon before it returns to Hell. Later, Ed places the occultist's cup in their museum. The Warrens attend the trial of Arne, where he is conviced of manslaughter and serves five years in prison. The Conjuring 2: In 1977, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren come out of a self-imposed sabbatical to travel to Enfield, a borough in north London. There, they meet Peggy Hodgson, an overwhelmed single mother of four who tells the couple that something evil is in her home. Ed and Lorraine believe her story when the youngest daughter starts to show signs of demonic possession. As the Warrens try to help the besieged girl, they become the next targets of the malicious spirit.
