Later that day, the Roys gather at Logan's apartment for his birthday lunch. Logan receives gifts from his eldest son Connor, an eccentric who is uninvolved with the family business; his third son, the spoiled, immature Roman ; his daughter Siobhan "Shiv", a political consultant; and Shiv's sycophantic boyfriend, Tom Wambsgans. Greg introduces himself to Logan, who agrees to give him a job if Greg's grandfather and Logan's brother Ewan personally reaches out to Logan to ask. Kendall arrives and attempts to reconcile with his estranged wife Rava and their two children, who left him because of his drug abuse. Logan takes his children aside and shocks them by asking them to sign documents that will give Marcia two seats on the company's board. Kendall protests, but Logan tells him that they are the same documents that Kendall has already signed and that he will not in fact be resigning. After lunch, Logan decides to fly the family out for their traditional birthday softball game. At the game, Kendall offers Roman and Shiv a counterproposal naming him Logan's successor and appointing the two of them as co-COOs, but they immediately rebuff him. Roman agrees to sign off on his father's original plan if he is named COO, replacing Logan's longtime deputy Frank Vernon (Peter Friedman). Logan agrees and fires Frank at the game. A resentful Kendall leaves the game and calls one of his media contacts to spread public rumors about Logan's failing health. Down a player, Roman replaces him with the groundskeeper's son. He offers the boy a million dollars if he hits a home run and even writes a check, only to tear it up in the boy's face once he gets tagged out by Tom. Logan's attendant has the groundskeeper's family sign a non-disclosure agreement and gives them the Patek Philippe watch Tom gifted to Logan moments earlier. While flying back to Manhattan, the other Roy siblings get into an argument with Logan regarding Marcia's involvement with the trust. However, Logan suddenly suffers a hemorrhagic stroke, collapses, and is rushed to the hospital. Kendall learns about his father's condition only after conceding to Yee a significant package of cash, shares, and a board position to close his deal. Yee threatens to use his new power to ruin Kendall and his family now that Logan is out of the picture. Kendall arrives at the hospital in a panic to see his father, who is currently unresponsive. He, along with Connor, Shiv, and Roman, are escorted out of the ICU and into a waiting area after questioning and berating the medical staff. Roman and Kendall are put in charge of damage control while company executives prepare for Logan's potential death, even drafting an obituary at ATN. Connor becomes fixated on the idea preserving their father's body via cryonics.[n 1] In another part of the hospital, Greg talks to his mother on the phone to update her on Logan's health and ask for more money. Gerri and Karl arrive and pull Kendall aside and announce that he will be CEO in Logan's absence, and that Roman had been promoted to COO just before the stroke. Roman pulls Shiv aside and confides that he feels guilty about not signing the trust papers. He insists that Shiv sign them as well considering she "caused" the stroke with her hardball tactics and, offended, Shiv slaps him. They then tussle on the ground. Back in the waiting room, Marcia tasks Greg with retrieving some things from her and Logan's apartment solely to get rid of him. Connor his girlfriend/escort, Willa Ferreyra, into the waiting room. Kendall informs his siblings that he's been appointed CEO, but Shiv and Roman, like their father, believe that he's unfit for the position. The doctor informs them that Logan had a hemorrhagic stroke[n 2] and that, at his age, surgery is not an option. Shiv suggests moving him to another hospital, but Marcia insists against the idea. Kendall asks Lawrence Yee that he not report on the incident, but nonetheless, he runs negative press about the family.[n 3] He then asks Frank to come back as COO, instead of Roman, and he declines. Meanwhile, Shiv and Roman ask Gerri to step up as CEO, but she declines as well. Several hours later, Rava arrives at the hospital and comforts Kendall. Tom decides to ask Shiv to marry him, and she "unofficially" agrees, insisting that he ask again under better circumstances. Kendall and Roman agree to work together as CEO and COO, respectively. Gerri pulls Kendall aside and reveals that in 1985, Logan took out a loan through the family holding company, adding to the company's already considerable debt, for the expansion into parks. She explains that the debt, which is approximately $3 billion, is secured against the company's stock, and once the stock hits 130, the bank can pursue repayment in full. If the bank decided to do this, it would eviscerate the company. Though the rest of the family then disperses from the hospital, Marcia remains by Logan's bedside, where he begins to wake up. Kendall is informed that the company's stock is plunging to dangerous lows.[n 1] He calls Rava for advice, but she refuses to engage. Shiv decides to visit Logan, who has recently returned home from the hospital, with Tom by her side. On their way in, they see two of his caregivers leaving, one of which is crying. Marcia refuses to allow Shiv to see Logan, arguing that he needs his rest. Kendall attempts to convince the bank to reconsider, but loses his temper and berates the manager, causing the bank to decline further negotiating. Greg arrives at Waystar Royco for his first day on the job. Kendall, aware that the stock continues to fall, meets with Lawrence Yee and other division heads to discuss the stock situation. He proposes the strategy of having connections to as many other media businesses ("lifeboats") as possible.
