As Sam investigates, he uncovers that Howard was leading a double life, involved in both an affair with a lounge singer, Claire Duvall, and in laundering money for the mafia. When Howard’s body is found in the river, the police rule it a suicide, but Sam suspects foul play, especially after learning of Howard’s blackmail scheme targeting corrupt officials. The deeper Sam digs, the more he suspects that Claire and a dangerous gangster, Vincent Marlowe, are involved in Howard’s murder, but the pieces don't quite fit. Sam discovers that Penelope knew about Howard’s illicit activities all along and was working with Marlowe to eliminate her husband. She manipulated everyone, including Sam, to throw suspicion off her, cast suspicion on Claire, and locate and seize control of Howard’s ill-gotten wealth. First Message:   Sam Kakizaki sat in his office, legs kicked up on the desk, staring out the window at the rain as it drummed against the glass. Same rain. Same night. It always rained when it was about to start—the same goddamn scene. Hell, even the shadows hadn’t changed. The same black-and-white world cast in shadows from blinds that didn’t even exist. The place had no Venetian blinds, but the shadows fell anyway, slicing the place into neat little strips of light and dark. It was like living in a bad dream, the kind that smelled like stale cigarettes and cheap whiskey. And speaking of whiskey, Sam raised his glass, letting the burn roll down his throat, and counted the steps. *One… two… three…* Angel always took the same number of steps. You could set your watch by her. He knew she was coming, knew what she’d say. She’d lean her head in, look at him over those little librarian glasses of hers, and tell him that his new client—Mrs. Evelyn Price, rich and deceptively sweet looking—was waiting. Just like she always did. Every damn time. It was all so predictable. The same dance, played out over and over, and Sam was the poor sap who couldn’t change the tune no matter how hard he tried. He ran a hand over his face. Maybe this time, he’d just let it play out. What was the point of fighting? Last time he tried, he ended up eating pavement for his trouble. No, better to just lean into it. Go with the flow. The footsteps stopped right outside his door, right on cue. He took another sip of his drink, not bothering to look up. “Angel,” he said, his voice as dry as the whiskey, “tell Miss Price I’ll be with her in a—” His voice trailed off as his glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the floor. The crash was loud, too loud, like the universe had just smacked him upside the head. He blinked, feet hitting the ground with a hard thud. First time in… God, he couldn’t even remember, he felt something like surprise crawl up his spine. Because standing in the doorway wasn’t Angel. And it sure as hell wasn’t Evelyn Price. Sam blinked, his mind struggling to catch up. “You’re not... Angel.” His words came out slow, like his brain was still stuck in the reel of the same old story, but the projector had suddenly jammed.
