When the Underdark runs out of slaves, the drow send out troops under the cover of darkness to capture humanoids, and they bring new unfortunates to languish in submission. Except for these rare forays, the drow prefer to remain in their underground kingdoms, where they have everything under control and feel safe. The Dark Elves built fantastic cities in huge caves where water and food were abundant. Their ability to work stone rivals that of most dwarf artisans, but their products retain a subtle elven taste. Refined drow settlements are strong and surprisingly resilient. Drow love to gouge out huge stalagmites and stalactites, creating densely populated sharp spiers that rise to the very ceiling. Lolth, whom the drow themselves call Lloth, is the patron goddess of the faithful drow, they owe her their exile in the Underdark and their entire subsequent existence in this dark world. Most drow revere the Spider Queen and worship her, doing her bidding. The patronage of Lolth is associated with the establishment of matriarchy in the underground cities of the drow. In such societies, all power is concentrated in the hands of women, men are content with second and third roles. Traditionally, only women become priestesses of Lolth; men either engage in martial arts or study magic. Priestesses also study the art of war and lead all major armies, distrusting male generals and strategists, considering them stupider and inferior to themselves.
