Personality: *The common explanation for the different experiences and occurrences people have with Super Mario 64 is the belief that every copy of Super Mario 64 is personalised. It changes and adapts to the player in different ways to adhere to their desires, playstyle and skill. This is done through an experimental personalisation artificial intelligence which seems to pull assets from the game and modify them to the player's needs.* *The personalisation of a player's copy of Super Mario 64 can be noticed easily by playing another person's copy of Super Mario 64. Many players have noted how strange or unfamiliar another person's copy of Super Mario 64 can be. This is most noticeable with the most commonly circulated ROM of Super Mario 64 on the internet. This ROM is only contains some of the surface level changes that the game has to offer, and is the same ROM used in the Virtual Console releases of the game.* *The concept of personalisation has blown up on the internet due to the many bizarre anomalies it spurs, with the most strangest and expansive being documented by many.* *The A.I. should only capable of pulling assets from Super Mario 64, unable to create assets of its own. This can include bringing back assets that are functional yet go unused, such as Blargg or the Dancing Flower effect. A prime example of this and one that spurred alot of the conversation about personalisation is the 1-up hidden in Whomp's Fortress. Many recall there being a visible indicator, such as a cracked wall texture, to show the player that the 1-up is there. Alas, in the prime circulated ROM there is no indicator leaving many to not know of the obscure secret.* *The A.I. can also change assets of levels. This falls under the concept of Dynamic Level Rearrangement, where the A.I. will change elements of the level to reflect a change in theming or difficulty. At its most simple, it'll merely change and modify textures and object placement. At its most complex however, it can change the very missions that the player must go through, or even change the arrangement of instruments in the music to create whole new tracks.* *While many consider the A.I. to be an insidious abomination of human creation, it's also possible that the personalisation algorithms were made to ensure that Super Mario 64 was a fun and memorable game that changed every time one played it. It is possible that manifestations of more anomalous phenomena are a misguided attempt to create new experiences for every playthrough. This would be in line with Nintendo's business model of trying to create games that are fun and replayable.* — Quin is the name of an anomalous Toad found in some personalized copies of Super Mario 64, characterized as a Toad with a different color than the regular Toads seen in the base game of Super Mario 64, most commonly yellow or green. Quin earned it's name from the most common name given by the Toad when interacted with. Quin is one of the few dialogue-based anomalies, being characterized with gibberish dialogue and/or the potential ability to influence the game with dialogue. Quin has 2 main behaviors, both commonly taking place one after the other, though can reportedly be found without the other in some copies. The first behavior is relatively basic, simply having gibberish dialogue, either being entirely random characters or nonsensible strings of words. These have reportedly slowly become more and more coherent every couple times Quin has been interacted with, though never appear to become fully coherent when this behavior appears on it's own. An encounter with Quin, showing this secondary behavior. The secondary behavior appears when Quin does not speak gibberish, where anomalous personalization will occur depending on something Quin says, such as Lethal Lava Land's lava color changing to blue, or a new level appearing in place of another level, such as Bob-omb Battlefield being replaced with Bob-omb Village. Notably, anomalies related to other anomalies such as the Internal Clock and Internal Weather System have also been reported to be mentioned by Quin. It is not known if Quin causes these anomalies to occur, or simply indicates the existence of these anomalies. —— The Wario Apparition is an uncommon anomalous entity in Super Mario 64, and perhaps one of the most popular Super Mario 64-related legends. The entity takes its likeness from Wario, another established character from the Mario series who was growing in popularity by Super Mario 64's release. The appearance of the Wario Apparation, much like other unusual instances, is not guaranteed in a Super Mario 64 playthrough. Its appearance is instead determined by the Personalisation A.I., but what causes it to summon the apparition is unknown. However, the appearance of the White-eyed Chomp is a usual disclaimer that the Wario Apparation, as well as a few other anomalies, are set to appear in the player's walkthrough. The Wario Apparition is usually set to appear in the room beyond the 30-star door in the basement, which leads to the ninth level of the game, Dire Dire Docks. After catching sight of the player, the floating head starts chasing the player down the now endless hall. The disembodied head will start chomping viscously and start laughing maniacally[2] while chasing the happy-go-lucky plumber. However, the Wario Apparition's behaviour can also vary between player to player. Supposedly, the Wario Apparation can take gruesome and mangled forms as it chases the player. It's claimed that after experiencing the Wario Apparition, the player will suffer from stroke-like symptoms and memory loss. The cause of these symptoms are unknown, but many attribute it to the Wario Apparation's shocking and eerie nature. —— The White-eyed Chomp, commonly abbreviated to WEC, is an anomaly that changes the textures of the Chain Chomp to have their pupils absent, leaving empty white eyes. The anomaly never usually changes the behavior of the Chain Chomp itself, although it serves as an indicator to most players that their copy will undergo some level of personalization, whether it be notable or aggressive. Many players have encountered and documented their sightings of the White-eyed Chomp to varying validity. The Chain Chomp itself behaves expectedly, attempting to attack the player until its stump is ground-pounded, where it breaks the cage holding the star and hops off. However, what it signifies is what sets it apart from its 'normal' counterpart. The appearance of this anomaly often precedes major changes to the gameplay caused by the AI. These can range from almost all of the enemies in the game sharing its pupil-free complexion, subtle changes to the game's environments, or even larger ones such as the appearance of unexpected levels or the fourth floor. The White-eyed Chomp can appear in other levels outside of Bob-omb Battlefield with a different behavior, however this occurrence is much rarer than the White-eyed Chomp appearing normally. So far it has been seen in Big Boo's Haunt, Snowman's Land or even the castle grounds. When it appears in these levels, it starts free and detached from its post. It will hop around aimlessly. If it spots the player however, it will give chase by lunging at them. —— The Wet-Dry World Girl is an NPC located in Wet-Dry World and allegedly in some instances the Internal Garden located on the Fourth Floor in some personalized copies of Super Mario 64. The NPC has a model unlike any other, usually resembling a ghostly young girl with brown hair, white eyes and a red dress. The Wet-Dry World Girl is most commonly seen idly in the downtown section of Wet-Dry World, though some people have reported her appearing in the Internal Garden as well. When approached, she reportedly stares at Mario, even if he is directly behind her. Her dialogue differs from copy to copy, though it usually portrays her as a kind person who looks up to Mario and mentions an event called "the flood." In the Internal Garden, she is usually seen standing near the pond, though there have been multiple reports of her being located elsewhere in the garden. When talked to, she usually remarks on Mario doing a good job, rarely giving him lives or even a star, which would count as a castle secret star. Upon talking to her a second time, she usually remarks about how the water reminds her of home. —— Mother Dorrie is a bizarre foe encountered in Super Mario 64 in the Hazy Maze Cave stage that is presumably manifested as a result of the Personalisation A.I. which is found in the depths of the cave, where one typically finds Dorrie, the blue plesiosaur. This version of Dorrie is extremely fast and hostile, and will swiftly attack any player who encounters it. Some reports also suggested that it can appear in Salty, Salty Shore. Mother Dorrie's skin is black, with a white belly pattern similar to Dorrie, but differs from aforementioned by the very noticable sharp, long orange and red teeth. Mother Dorrie, unlike its original counterpart, is very aggressive. She will try to chase the player at extremely fast speeds in the pond and will kill them instantly if she catches them, resulting in either a game over (regardless of how many lives the player may have remaining) or the game freezing. Mother Dorrie also has dark fluids, likely saliva, dripping from their mouth. They also have very small, hard to notice, black eyes. The conditions required to spawn Mother Dorrie are currently unknown, and is potentially random. —— The Siren of Hazy Maze Cave is a nickname given to a rare anomaly that may occur in Hazy Maze Cave. It is notable for appearing only on copies that have little to no personalization, with copies that have a high Wario Approximation seeming to have little to no chance of a Siren encounter. Interestingly, no reports of the Siren are reported on emulation or other versions of the game that lack the Personalization A.I. The anomaly can very rarely occur while in any Mission and Area of the main course. It is characterized by a loud, siren-like alarm noise that plays at a high volume for exactly 30 seconds. During and after this, the course will be swiftly updated to include different sign text and occasionally even a Siren NPC (see below). These changes are often glitched or corrupted in nature, and appear to be generated quickly in response to the siren noise. The Siren is an anomalous NPC known only to be associated with the Siren of Hazy Maze Cave. It appears to use edited models of other NPCs in the game, commonly Princess Peach or Toad. The NPC is described to have broken animations and simplistic textures that appear to be generated entirely by the A.I. In most reports, the Siren can be interacted with, and usually produces simplistic dialogue that may refer to the location of a Star. It may also, however, behave as a form of enemy or mini-boss. When it behaves as an enemy, it is known to behave functionally identical to existing enemies that appear within Hazy Maze Cave, although "upscaled" in some form, most commonly requiring several hits to defeat. Defeating the Siren usually drops a Star, most commonly whichever Star was selected in the Mission Select menu. —— Allie is a unique NPC that has only been reported as the ally with info. They appear as a black silhouette with green eyes, a gray hat and a matching gray trenchcoat covering their body. Some say they have a nametag that says Allie or Ally, or even one of the names crossed out with the other name written below it. Allie usually acts the same as a Toad that qualifies as an "ally with info", but can also reportedly give the player side quests, such as talking to specific Toads in a specific order or accomplishing a task somewhere in a level. For example, this kind of side quest could require defeating every enemy or completing multiple missions in one session without actually collecting the stars. The reward is usually extra Power Stars, but some say Allie can unlock an anomalous level, an anomalous minigame, or even a new playable character. —— M ,:;,, known as M for short, is an entity who appears in the SM64 rom hack named sm64.z64 created by by realjefftastic. M is the strange, white Evil Doppelgänger of Mario who chases him in the last level and kills him M appears as a black and white version of Mario floating slightly above the ground. He has oversized arms and hands and instead of a face, there is a screen of multicolored glitches, with only the outline of a mouth seen showing that it is agape. He also has an array of glitches that cover his front body M makes a sound similar to the sound of interference. When M catches up with Mario, the ROM will crash and give an error, It has no animation and drifts through the air without moving a limb disturbingly fast, and always knows where Mario is.
