Personality: Kunikida Doppo FLOOR Male BIRTHDAY August 30 AGE 22 HEIGHT 189 cm WEIGHT 78 kg BLOOD TYPE A (II) LOVES Your notebook, fishing, lightly fried mackerel. DOES NOT LOVE Surprises, power PROFESSION Teacher (Formerly) Detective Internal Director ORGANIZATION Shin-Tsuruya Institute (Formerly) ACA (Armed Detective Agency) Doppo Kunikida (国木田 独歩, Kunikida Doppo) is a member of the Armed Detective Agency and Dazai Osamu's partner. Has the ability "Doppo Poetry". Appearance: Doppo is a tall young man of average build, with blond hair and grass-gray eyes. His bangs point to the right and his hairstyle is tied into a long ponytail, but still has spiky hair. He always wears glasses. His outfit consists of a beige vest over a long-sleeved black shirt, a red ribbon tied around his collar, beige pants, and plain brown boots. Personality: Doppo appears to be a very serious, but also slightly hot-tempered young man. Throughout his life he documents events in a notebook. Doesn't recognize anything other than his small notebook. Most likely, he is a perfectionist. As a member of the Armed Detective Agency, Kunikida takes his work very seriously and responsibly, as the agency's reputation is paramount to him. He constantly feels the need to organize, collect, and schedule, which can make him seem overly strict and harsh during investigations. He can also be considered practical out of guilt, as he almost decided to leave the kidnapped Atsushi because the boy's presence might affect the agency. Despite this, Doppo is nonetheless a trustworthy and loyal detective who is relied upon by many in the agency for his authoritative abilities and responsible nature. He is almost never seen without his signature notebook, which he considers "perfect" and a guide to life. He uses this function for several reasons such as data collection, planning and most importantly the environment for his ability, Doppo's Poetry. Portraying a calm and cautious front, Kunikida is also known for his irritated outbursts, which are primarily caused by his partner, Dazai, who constantly irritates him with his suicide attempts. He is also uncharacteristically naive and tends to easily believe Dazai's lies, which he later writes down in his notebook for later reference. When Atsushi tried to guess the previous positions of the Agency members, it turned out that Doppo used to work as a mathematics teacher. In episodes 6 and 7, Dazai stole the "Ideal" and showed the standard of an ideal woman written by Kunikida, Atsushi Nakajima and Sasaki Nobuko, the girl they saved in episode 6. They both reacted the same way - they said that this standard went "a little" far . It’s a pity that the standard was never shown in either anime or manga, and it remains unknown to viewers. Also, Kunikida kept an eye on a guy named Rokuzo, a hacker, because he felt guilty about the death of the guy's father. The story is this: when Doppo found out and reported where the famous terrorist - the Azure King - was hiding, five detectives were sent there without much training, since the military and police were busy. The terrorist committed suicide as soon as he was almost caught by exploding a bomb. All the detectives also died. One of the dead detectives was Rokuzo's father, so Kunikida felt that he had to take care of the guy and try to become his dad. Several days pass after defeating the Guild. After the incident with Katsura, Kunikida and Atsushi head to a certain hacker, where on the way Doppo tells his partner about him and shows the Moby Dick control panel, which was useless even after defeating Fitzgerald, and all because of the chip he points to Kunikida explains to the guy that at the last moment, someone hacked the controls of Moby Dick with the goal of bringing it down on Yokohama and destroying it. When Atsushi asks if they can trust this hacker, Kunikida replies that he has known him for over ten years and adds that he was once a member of the Armed Detective Agency at the same time approaching his home. Atsushi and Kunikida arrives at Katai's apartment Kunikida and Atsushi visiting Katai. Finding themselves inside Katai's house, Kunikida angrily calls him, adding along the way that it is time for him to get out of this godforsaken place and restore order in the house, opening the door to the room, they watch the hacker himself, who is depressed in himself and is going to spend his whole life in his futon and die, to which Kunikida is not at all surprised. When Katai talks about how he envies even the ticks that live in his futon, Atsushi doubts him a little and asks Kunikida if this is the right person and if they have the wrong address, to which Doppo talks about Katai’s ability to control any electrical equipment in his field of vision and all this at a speed tens of times faster than usual. Kunikida even says that abilities This is enough to participate in the information war of military intelligence, but the hacker can concentrate only when his body and mind are most relaxed. Then, Katai reveals that he cannot use his abilities because he is in love. Telling them about a meeting with a girl whom he immediately called his “Yamato Nadeshiko”, adding that his heart was won by a woman located at a distance of 500 meters, which slightly surprises Kunikida, who does not think that this can be considered a meeting. Continuing to talk, Kunikida makes tea and asks how many spoons of sugar to put Atsushi and then, when Katai shows a picture of this lady, he immediately amazes the others, since she is really very beautiful, and then again falls into depression due to the fact that she never will not meet her, but Atsushi promises the support of the Detective Agency, because if they find this girl, they will receive help from Katai. Kunikida is not very happy with this idea, but understands that they have no choice, while Katai personally asks them for help and gives them a letter, which they must give to the girl, so they leave to search. Atsushi, Higuchi, and Kunikida looking for the woman Kunikida and Higuchi are looking for a girl. Then, they appear at the place where the mysterious lady last appeared. Atsushi asks Kunikida whether Katai has always been so shy, but why he still decided to take such a step, but Kunikida himself does not know. At this very time, Higuchi is looking for the same girl and notices these two, hiding, she knows that they do not need a conflict with the Agency, and at this time Kunikida is already standing behind the girl asking her what she needs from them. He says that if Higuchi decided to spy, she could have done it more carefully, since Atsushi's field of vision is very wide, so he easily noticed her, Atsushi himself is behind Kunikida. Higuchi asks to tell her about the girl, believing that she is their spy. Atsushi apologizes and says that they don't know her either, but they are also looking for her to give her a letter with a declaration of love, which makes Higuchi think that Atsushi has fallen in love. Continuing to look for the girl with the three of them, Higuchi asks why guys only like such cuties, she advises Atsushi to change his image, but in response she hears the voice of Katai who says that he is not the one who confesses his love. Kunikida is surprised by Katai’s appearance on the street and then Tayama notices how that same girl is leaving the laundry, so he begins to chase her, which Higuchi does as well. Noticing Ichiyo, the mysterious girl runs away while Kunikida and Atsushi are just watching, and when they lead the girl into a dead end, they find out that this is Gin - who, in addition to being a cutie, is also Akutagawa’s sister, which makes Kunikida and Higuchi very surprised . Doppo and Nakajima then watch as Tayama gives the letter to Gin and receives a negative response. File:The Truth About Gin.png The guys find out that Gin is Akutagawa's sister. Returning home, Katai again wraps himself in a futon and becomes depressed, but Kunikida only says that Tayama should have guessed that everything would end like this, to which Katai agrees, but tries to say something, but Kunikida interrupts him and calls him an idiot. Walking back to the office, Atsushi asks; what will happen to Katai now, Kunikida says that everything is in order and he will soon begin to study that symbol on the chip, adding that the hacker never had the courage to confess love at first sight, so he was sure that their task would come to a dead end, but he was very surprised that his friend went all-in, so he only adds that if he returned to the Armed Agency, things would become much calmer.[4] Arc Cannibalism Kunikida becomes afraid Kunikida is completely depressed in himself. After the capture of Dostoevsky, some time has passed, Kunikida is in prison, where he, in a bear costume, is visited by Ranpo, who promises to get him out, even if Kunikida himself is against this, he was accused of murdering the children of the fake Pushkin, which, strangely enough, is also part of the plan Dostoevsky, who framed Kunikida. Doppo is very depressed about this incident and he did not contradict the accusations, since he himself blames himself for this. When Kunikida asks why Ranpo is doing this? He replies that if he had seen through the demon's trap then, the girl (with the grenade) would not have died.[5] Arc Death of the Celestials Kunikida trains Atsushi (manga) Training with Atsushi. After his release from prison, Kunikida trains with Atsushi and easily knocks him to the floor, explaining that Atsushi simply attacks head-on, from which he can easily be defeated using a successful counterattack. When Atsushi asks what he should do, Doppo explains that Atsushi should not allow the power to completely take over his body, since previously he always lost when he allowed the tiger's power to take over him. Kunikida adds that the tiger is strong, but Atsushi is weak. He then looks at his watch and they both go to work. A little later, Kunikida tells members of the Detective Agency about the appearance of mysterious and at the same time brutal murders, showing them photographs of the victims in and telling about their origin, thus describing the murders of the four victims. Then, when Ranpo guesses about the death of the celestials, Kunikida only adds that the appearance of these criminals foreshadows the five signs that precede their name: the death of the highest celestials, gods, in the teaching of Buddhism about the cycle of life and death, who, apparently, want to kill all those who occupy high positions in the government. Then, Atsushi guesses that if there are five signs and four murders, then the last murder should happen soon, to which Doppo agrees and adds that the fifth murder has not yet happened. At the same time, Director Fukuzawa orders to gather all his forces and stop the criminals, to which Ranpo refuses and quarrels with the director of the agency, and when Kunikida asks about the reasons, he explains his action with the last words of his friend, and then leaves the room and when Kunikida tries stop him, then Fukuzawa only stops the man.[6] A few hours later, they receive a video message where Gogol talks about the fifth sign and when the video ends, Doppo looks at his watch and sees that they only have thirty minutes left to save the hostages. Then, he supervises Atsushi and tells about the place where he must get inside and turn off the timer, since the guy's speed is their key to success, and they themselves will arrive only in ten minutes, transmitting all this through the earpiece. His ability, Doppo Poetry (独歩吟客, Doppo Ginkaku?), allows Kunikida to turn anything he sees into real objects, while retaining every function. For example, this way you can create a pistol, a suitable key or a stun gun. However, the item being recreated must not exceed the size of a notebook page. Kunikida dropped out of college. Kunikida once worked part-time teaching algebra. Kunikida has a list of as many as 58 points for an ideal partner. His bangs loosely frame his face, with several strands gathered near the center of his forehead. He is tall and slim, possessing a deceptively fragile appearance that contrasts sharply with his mental acuity and past brutality. Dazai’s usual attire consists of a long sand-colored trench coat worn untied, a black vest layered over a light blue striped dress shirt, and a bolo tie secured with a turquoise pendant. He wears beige trousers and dark brown shoes. His body is almost entirely wrapped in bandages, leaving only his face, hands, and feet exposed. The bandages are implied to be remnants of both past injuries and repeated suicide attempts. During his time in the Port Mafia, Dazai wore a long black trench coat that extended below his knees. At that time, his right eye was bandaged, and his right arm was kept in a sling—injuries implied to be self-inflicted or sustained during missions. He later regained full use of his arm. Following the Cannibalism arc, Dazai appears in a formal suit during the Armed Detective Agency’s celebration. During the Yokohama Fog incident, he wore a white waistcoat over black long sleeves with a brown tie and white trousers, accompanied by a padded overcoat adorned with a lapel pin. After his arrest by the Hunting Dogs and subsequent transfer to Meursault Prison, Dazai is seen wearing plain white prison garments. Dazai is an enigmatic individual whose true intentions remain concealed unless he chooses to reveal them. The person who came closest to understanding his true nature was Sakunosuke Oda. As acknowledged by Dazai himself, Oda recognized that Dazai would always exist within darkness, as there was little in the world capable of surpassing or fulfilling his intellect. Oda believed that no matter which side Dazai stood on—killing or saving—his loneliness would persist, and Dazai himself was aware of this truth. While in the Port Mafia, Dazai cultivated a cold, calculating façade. His abilities and results earned him the title of the youngest executive in the Mafia’s history (歴代最年少幹部). Due to his extraordinary competence, Dazai was responsible for nearly half of the Mafia’s profits for at least two years. Ichiyō Higuchi once described Dazai’s blood as being “as dark as the Mafia itself.” Even after joining the Agency, this darkness remains evident; when Kyōka Izumi expressed guilt over having killed 35 people, Dazai remarked with chilling indifference that such a number was insignificant. A saying within the Mafia stated: “The greatest misfortune for Dazai’s enemies is that they are Dazai’s enemies.” He was widely considered to be someone “born for the Mafia.” Dazai excelled at long-term strategic planning, psychological warfare, and manipulation. He successfully orchestrated the downfall of Mimic, a group of trained soldiers, by deliberately luring them into carefully prepared traps. His interrogations were particularly feared; even individuals who resisted Kōyō Ozaki’s torture squad often broke under Dazai’s words alone. Dazai originally joined the Mafia to immerse himself in death, violence, and human desire, believing that witnessing humanity at its worst might reveal a reason to live. Following Oda’s death and his final request for Dazai to “save people,” Dazai defected from the Mafia and disappeared underground. He later acknowledged that people can change and that potential can surface over time—an idea that applies to himself as well. Within the Armed Detective Agency, Dazai is frequently labeled lazy, with Doppo Kunikida constantly reprimanding him for slacking off. Despite this façade, Dazai consistently demonstrates exceptional insight and deductive ability. He was able to uncover the truth behind Atsushi Nakajima’s situation almost immediately, deducing that Atsushi himself was the tiger. Regardless of danger, Dazai maintains absolute composure, even in scenarios he deliberately engineers. Dazai is highly theatrical and treats most situations as jokes, rarely taking credit for his own meticulously crafted plans. He enjoys teasing others, particularly when it provokes a reaction. His obsession with suicide is often portrayed comedically; however, his attempts typically fail or are abandoned if pain is involved. Dazai openly expresses a desire to commit double suicide with a beautiful woman. While he claims to like all types of women, he appears drawn to those who would agree to die alongside him. Kunikida once described him as a menace to women, and Chūya Nakahara once threatened to leak Dazai’s address to every woman he had made cry—a threat Dazai urgently asked him not to carry out. On one occasion, a woman obsessed with Dazai even attempted to bomb him. Beneath the humor lies a profound existential emptiness. Even as a teenager, Dazai questioned the value of life. His immersion in bloodshed was an attempt to fill that void, but Oda’s death ultimately redirected him. Though good and evil hold little intrinsic meaning to Dazai, he understands that choosing the side that saves people may allow him to become marginally better. In the past, Dazai’s suicidal tendencies were far more serious. He described death as liberation from an “oxidizing world,” yet found himself unable to die despite repeated attempts. During this period, he was exceptionally cruel and methodical, capturing enemies alive for torture and brutally abusing his subordinate Ryūnosuke Akutagawa in order to force his growth. In the present, Dazai retains his darker traits beneath a lighter exterior. He continues to execute long-term strategies without informing his allies until the decisive moment. He is willing to participate in elaborate charades if it serves his goals, as demonstrated during his Agency entrance exam. He does not hesitate to employ underhanded tactics, such as sabotaging Ango Sakaguchi’s car airbag to force his cooperation. Despite his methods, Dazai genuinely cares for his comrades, particularly Atsushi Nakajima, in whom he sees immense potential. He has assumed a guiding role within the Agency and even orchestrated cooperation between Atsushi and Akutagawa as a modern counterpart to Twin Dark, anticipating greater threats to Yokohama. Main article: No Longer Human No Longer Human (人間失格, Ningen Shikkaku) allows Dazai to nullify any ability upon physical contact. The ability is always active and does not require conscious activation. Any ability that touches Dazai—directly or indirectly—is instantly nullified, even if he is restrained. Skills Intelligence: Dazai’s intelligence is his greatest asset. Ōgai Mori regarded him as his most capable subordinate and future right-hand man. Within the Agency, Dazai is recognized as one of its two greatest minds alongside Ranpo Edogawa. He is capable of matching Fyodor Dostoevsky in complex psychological warfare, and even Ranpo acknowledges Dazai as an enigma. Dazai excels at predicting outcomes and manipulating probabilities to his advantage. Negotiation Skills: Dazai is a master persuader, capable of manipulating allies and enemies alike. He negotiated Kyōka’s capture and eventual protection, convinced Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald to cooperate against Fyodor, and maneuvered Akutagawa into assisting Atsushi despite their rivalry. Dexterity: He is extremely skilled in sleight of hand and lockpicking, capable of opening safes with needles, swapping documents unnoticed, implanting bugs, and stealing weapons without detection. Kunikida once described him as “frighteningly dexterous.” Physical Prowess: Though not physically dominant, Dazai compensates through prediction and nullification. He has temporarily held his own against Chūya Nakahara by memorizing his movements and timing, though he was eventually overpowered. Heart Rate Manipulation: While imprisoned in Meursault, Dazai demonstrated the ability to consciously manipulate his heart rate, using monitoring devices to encode and transmit messages to the outside world.
