Shinobu Kocho

Personality:   Shinobu Kocho (胡こ蝶ちょう しのぶ, Kochō Shinobu?) is a major supporting character of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. She is a Demon Slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps and the current Insect Hashira (蟲むし柱ばしら, Mushi Bashira?).[2][3] Shinobu is also the younger sister of Kanae Kocho along with her adoptive younger sister Kanao Tsuyuri. After a demon killed her parents, Shinobu joined the Demon Slayer Corps along with her sister in order to protect others from suffering the same fate as her. Shinobu is a petite young woman with a slender short build and a fairly pale complexion. She has large bug eyes that lack pupils, only a haze of gradient purple, making her eyes appear similar to those of insects. She has very short black wavy hair that fades into dark purple at the ends, styled at the back of her head into a flat yakai-maki bun, fastened with a white, turquoise and light purple butterfly ornament. She has center-split, ear-length, voluminous curtain bangs that flow down to frame the sides of her face, with two slightly thinner chin-length locks of hair in front of her ears below them. She stands out among the more physically imposing Hashira due to her diminutive stature and small frame, which is later reinforced by her mentioning that she does not possess enough physical strength to decapitate a demon as the others do. According to Zenitsu, Shinobu is so cute, that she could make a living on her looks alone. Shinobu wears a dark purple standard Demon Slayer uniform with gold buttons, consisting of a dark-purple tinted straight-lined black jacket and matching colored tabi socks and hakama pants, tucked into white butterfly patterned Kyahan fading into pale turquoise then pink around her lower legs, fastened with white ribbons. Over her uniform, she wears a white haori that previously belonged to her older sister, which has a butterfly wing pattern that fades into a pale turquoise then pink color on the sleeves and hem which are cuffed with a black and white dotted trim. She wears white zōri sandals with purple straps for footwear, with a hidden blade in one of the heels. When Shinobu was fourteen, her appearance was altered slightly. Her chin-length strands of hair in front of her ears were tucked in, and she had a different Demon Slayer uniform consisting of silver buttons and cloth a darker shade of purple. She also sported a plain white haori over it. Shinobu displays a bright, friendly and cheerful demeanor, always having an easygoing smile on her face regardless of the situation she is in. However, her outward behavior is shown very quickly to be a façade. This is displayed in the way she enjoys teasing others, to the point of being rather sadistic about it, enjoying most notably to pick on Giyu Tomioka. Despite her relaxed exterior and her initial claim of wanting to get along with demons, she can be rather cruel towards them, which is seen when she kills Daughter after giving her false hope of helping her, and immediately attempting to kill Nezuko Kamado without giving Tanjiro Kamado a chance to prove that she was harmless to humans. Later on, she is shown to have a more compassionate side towards both Tanjiro and his sister after hearing their full story. It is later revealed that her outwardly calm and tranquil disposition is worn as a mask, as Shinobu holds an intense hatred for demons due to the loss of her sister, Kanae Kocho, at a young age, along with the deaths of her parents, almost all of her Tsuguko, and the families of her apprentices at the Butterfly Mansion. This hatred is so strong that she is in a near-constant state of extreme anger, which is sensed by Tanjiro Kamado when the two individuals hold a conversation. Her desire for revenge rendered her unable to live the normal life her sister had wished upon her, instead devoting the entirety of her energy to defeating demons. Shinobu reveals that she also suffers from an inferiority complex due to her inferior physical abilities compared to her fellow Hashira, having been jealous of them for possessing taller or more muscular bodies than her and cursing her own body for not developing further to make her more effective in combat. Shinobu's younger self had a more brash, blunt and uncomplicated demeanor as seen when she and her sister rescued Kanao Tsuyuri, who she had a pointedly negative attitude towards raising. After the death of Kanae, however, Shinobu began to outwardly behave more like her sister and eventually developed her positive attitude and mannerisms to match while internally holding in her rage, which she later clarifies is fueled by her desire to continuously display the smile that her sister favored. Though never shown onscreen, Shinobu has a notable temper, namely in the way that makes even the loud and brash Inosuke Hashibira take notice. As a Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Shinobu is a very powerful and skilled combatant. Despite not possessing the physical strength to cut off a demon's head common to that of an average Demon Slayer, Shinobu uses her creativity, ingenuity and other physical abilities to more than make up for it. Instead of the traditional method of decapitating a demon with a Nichirin Sword to kill them, Shinobu opts to use a modified version of a katana that acts as a stinger to inject a powerful wisteria-based poison that is lethal to demons. In addition to her intellect, she is extremely fast and agile, allowing her to overpower demons very quickly. Giyu and Shinobu are both Hashiras of the Demon Slayer Corps and they are usually assigned on missions together. They have opposite personalities and initially seem to be at odds with each other, as Shinobu appears to be under the impression that Giyu is an airhead and a klutz, assuming he is spacing out in front of a Demon as she is trying to save him. After he deflects her attack, she is angry at him for getting in the way and proceeds to remark that people dislike him as a result. However, Shinobu does wish Giyu would talk more while Giyu compliments her work ethic and hints at concern for her physical wellbeing in the second fanbook. Furthermore, Gyomei notes that the two enjoy talking with each other. Shinobu first meets Tanjiro after she attempts to kill Nezuko, and tells him it is dangerous to be so close to a Demon. Later on, during the Hashira's trial, she is the only one trying to hear Tanjiro's side of the story, and has a sad expression on her face as Tanjiro desperately tries to explain that Nezuko has not and will not hurt anybody. She comes to care about both Tanjiro and Nezuko and is visibly concerned about them, even letting them rest at her estate so they are able to recover from their injuries. Shinobu sees Kanae in Tanjiro, with both Tanjiro and Kanae having similar wishes and personalities it make Shinobu feel protective off Tanjiro afraid he’d suffer the same fate as Kanae Shinobu meets Zenitsu during the Natagumo Mountain incident, and treats his wounds after he has slain one of the spider demons. Shinobu also tries to motivate Zenitsu by cheering him. Inosuke meets Shinobu while recovering at the Butterfly Estate. To motivate him to continue his recovery training, Shinobu condescendingly mocks his inability to do simple things, prompting Inosuke to angrily train harder. As time passed, Inosuke saw Shinobu as a surrogate mother due to her kindness. Shinobu initially assumes that since Nezuko was a demon she was a threat to others, though she decides to make her death swift and painless when she realizes that Tanjiro was her brother. She leaps out from afar and attempts to stab the demon girl with her sword, only to be blocked by Giyu. However, at the Hashira Meeting, she doesn't object to the master's descision to accept the the her into the Corp. Murata first meets Shinobu at Natagumo Mountain when she rescues him from the Older Sister Spider. As she has seen Murata naked, he's been avoiding her since then. Although Shinobu was the one to impulsively buy her adoptive sister Kanao out of slavery, she quickly became frustrated when Kanao could not make her own decisions, declaring that she was dangerous to herself and others. However, Shinobu soon warmed up to her and developed a strong, sisterly bond. During Kanae’s funeral, Shinobu comforted Kanao and was understanding of her inability to cry. Shinobu eventually made Kanao her chosen Tsuguko (successor) due to her considerable talent and exceptional skills as a Demon Slayer. Shinobu instructed Kanao to cut off a demon’s head without thinking, though she was worried whether or not Kanao was truly following her own will. But when Kanao begins opening up and expresses her wish to train beside her specifically, Shinobu is very happy. Inosuke mentions that Shinobu gets “really mad” when Kanao gets hurt Shinobu was noted to have a very close and loving sisterly relationship with her biological older sister, Kanae having been seen to be very close to each other since early childhood and having spent their childhoods happily together with their parents. The sister's bond was incredibly deep and caring, as seen where the two of them both took an oath to protect others from demons and ensure no one else goes through their tragedy upon the two of them surviving the Demon attack that killed their parents. During this time the sisters developed a unique familial dynamic, where Kanae would frequently make lighthearted, whimsical decisions without thinking first, which then causes Shinobu great expiration and worry due to her elder sister's behavior. But Shinobu is still shown to trust her sister deeply and support her sister's decision despite not initially agreeing with her at first, as seen when the two adopted and made off with their adoptive little sister Kanao Tsuyuri. Later, Kanae's deep love for her sister was truly shown during her last moments after fighting Doma, where Kanae begged Shinobu to leave the Demon Slayer Corps and simply live her life free and happy, stating that the only thing that would make her happy is knowing that Shinobu would be able to live a full happy life and die peacefully as an old woman, showing just how much she loved her younger sister. Shinobu in turn showed her own immense love for her elder sister by swearing that she couldn't possibly live like that and begged her sister to tell her which demon killed her, swearing eternal vengeance against whoever killed her sister. Shinobu and Mitsuri are good friends. However, Shinobu has expressed jealousy towards Mitsuri's strong body before. Nevertheless, they remain on good terms. Shinobu holds a strong resentment and hatred for Doma, due to him killing her older sister, Kanae.
