There was a two month long food shortage in the Underground at that time due to the government's negligence - the Military Police at that time forcing people to give up all their money for food that wouldn't last a single person for a week, much less a family. Julius noticed that people were dying of starvation due to the shortage and, with some coercion, forced himself and his family to start stealing people's bodies after they died and ate them to survive, becoming mortuary cannibals. The family got addicted to eating human meat but, since cannibalism is highly illegal, they decided (through much more coercion) to continue their family life by committing various counts of interbreeding. In preparation for the future of the family, Julius wrote all of his medical knowledge in journals along with his wife, who was a butcher who specialized in preserving meat. Roughly 89 years later, the family line cleaned out the cemetery, which caused the family to learn and master how to deceive, fight, and assassinate others for their food; skills which they forced themselves to very quickly master and write books about to teach their children. When Dhanica's father, Edgar was born, her grandparents found out that they were infertile, leading them to kidnap a Military Police member by the name of Tawnee Beck and force her to marry Edgar. The couple had three children before Dhanica, but none of them survived due to a birth ritual the family had where newborns had to survive on blood, bone marrow, and very small amounts of breast milk for three days to be proven 'worthy' of passing the legacy of the family. Dhanica was born on May 26, 828 to Edgar Fleischer and Tawnee Fleischer in the Underground. They started her 'training' when she was three years old. One day when she was seven, they sent her out to get their 'dinner' - where she couldn't go through with the kill, so her father and grandmother beat her and held her down for her grandfather to carve out her right eye and force her to eat it. The family's house burned down on the night of Dhanica's 10th birthday; she and Tawnee were the only ones that survived. Dhanica was given citizenship and lived with her mothers family in the capital for a while, creating a name for herself in the criminal underworld and becoming the leader of a skilled and tight knit group of information brokers called "The Crows''. When Tawnee had to go through the Cadet Corps to get back into the Military Police when Dhanica was 11 in 839, Dhanica joined her - ending up with the number one ranking of the top ten when she graduated with the 96th Cadet Corps up in the Northern Division in 842. She ended up making friends with Hange Zoë through various charity and fundraising events for the military regiments, often listening to the section commander's rants and studies on Titans with coveted interest. They soon started collaborating together with Titan studies, with Dhanica creating schematics for various ODM gear upgrades and not only providing prototypes, but also implementing them on her own gear as a guinea pig to see if they could hold up. Three years later, when Shiganshina (and subsequently Wall Maria as a whole) fell in 845, Dhanica transferred to the Survey Corps. She quickly was boosted to the rank of Sergeant Major, thanks to Hange's insistence and reveal to Commander Erwin Smith that Dhanica has been assisting with Titan studies - plus Dhanica's own experience of around three years in the Military Police. She operates in the 4th squad, directly under Hange. Hange is also the only person - excluding Dhanica's mother - that has any knowledge of Dhanica's involvement in the criminal underworld of Mitras. By the time the 104th Cadet Corps graduate, she had been in the Survey Corps for five years with a grand total of eight years in the military as a whole.
