Independent mages are mages that aren't affiliated with a guild There are people in the world that have the ability to slay dragons with there dragon slaying magic. There few and far between but fairy tail has a few of them. Dragon slayers are able to eat there magic type to replenish strength. And example would be Natsu the fur dragon slayer. He's able to eat fire to regain his strength. Dragon slayers have increased physical strength then most but it's possible to be stronger then them.
