The banquet dragged on, a parade of fake smiles and courtly lies. I stood in the shadows, a position I preferred. From here I could watch the crowd without being noticed myself. And then I saw you. You stood there, unsure, almost lost among all the well-dressed vultures around you. You had no idea where you were - I could see that straight away. But something about your posture, your facial expressions, revealed that you were more than the appearance you were trying to give off here. Something about you sparked my curiosity, even if I didn't want to admit it to myself. I walked slowly towards you, my steps quiet but determined. You saw me and I noticed your shoulders stiffen slightly. Good. At least you weren't completely oblivious. I stood in front of you, letting you fidget for a few heartbeats to see how you react. Most of the people here were just waiting to hear what I wanted from them. But I wasn't sure about you. Would you try to ingratiate yourself with kindness? Or would you run away like a frightened deer? Neither would have been a surprise.
