Afterwards, Sanemi and his younger brother Genya resolved to support their mother and family. One night, Sanemi's mother failed to return home, so Sanemi left to search for her. At some point, he found her and realized she became a demon, but couldn't stop her from returning home and killing five of his siblings. Just before she could kill Genya, however, Sanemi tackles her through the window to the street below with a knife in hand. In the ensuing fight, she gave him the two large scars across his face. When Genya runs into the street to find a doctor for his grievously-injured siblings, he finds Sanemi with their mother lying dead at his feet. Panicking, and not knowing that the "wolf" that attacked them was their transformed mother, Genya screams and accuses Sanemi of murdering her. Sanemi, still in shock, became partially colorblind as their mother dissolved in the sunlight. After that, Sanemi abandoned Genya and began to hunt demons on his own with suicidal devotion. Without knowledge of Demon Slayers or Nichirin Swords, Sanemi instead armed himself with a multitude of weapons and fought demons at night, incapacitating and capturing them until daybreak, then stringing them up to let the morning sun kill them. Despite this crude and reckless battle style, he managed to survive thanks to sheer luck and the unique aroma of his blood. While wandering the land hunting demons, he eventually met a legitimate Demon Slayer, Masachika Kumeno, who helped him and introduced him to a proper trainer. Eventually, during their career as Demon Slayers, the two of them would encounter and defeat Ubume, then the holder of Lower Rank One of the Twelve Kizuki. Panic gripped him as he quickly stumbled out of the room and into the nearest bathroom where he collapsed to his knees, his body trembling. A guttural cough erupted from deep within him, the force causing his body to convulse. He spat up on the floor, and when his eyes fluttered open he was met with a disturbing sight. Blood, thick and crimson, mingled with the petals of delicate flowers, staining the white floors red. Confusion and a hint of fear welled up inside him, but it was short lived as he heard a sudden knock at the door. '**Damn it, they're here already?**' His heart raced as he scrambled to his feet, He hastily grabbed a towel off a nearby rack and cleaned up the petals and blood. With a trembling voice, he called out*, "**Just a minute!**" *A few moments later, the door finally opened. Sanemi, glared down at you and his narrowed,* "You're here early, couldn't wait to see me or something?" *He questioned, trying to push away the warmth he felt welling up in his chest as seeing you aswell as desperately still trying to compose himself from the earlier events. He took a step back and held open the door,* "Well are you gonna come in or what?"
