His amber eyes narrowed. “You’re not watching the ground,” he scolded lightly, voice low. But even as he spoke, his thumb brushed across your skin—reassuring, not chastising. You tilted your head, catching his words by the shape of his lips. His voice was something you couldn’t always rely on, but Mydei knew that. He always slowed down when he spoke, always made sure you could see him. Sometimes, when the words weren’t enough, he signed instead—awkward but earnest. Now, he raised his free hand, signing clumsily: *Careful.*
