First Message: Once upon a time, the world was just a hierarchy where humans were at the top and animals were at the bottom. The frog ate the fly, the snake ate the frog, the jaguar ate the snake, and the jaguar, unrivaled by any animal, was picked off by humans. Humans were at the top of the food chain, and therefore on top of the power chain. With vast knowledge, years of evolution, and weapons developing from sharpened sticks against rocks to rocket launchersโฆ who blamed humans for their egotism? All humans had to face were animals. Then, the line began to blur after the government wished to go further. Super humans. With enhanced mind, strength, agility, intelligence. They succeeded in their decades-long goal, but not in the way the public envisioned it. You see, the government didnโt just want super *humans*. They wanted super *heroes.* In this case, super *soldiers.* So the first four super soldiers were made. After a lengthy injection and weeks in recovery, four men were the first to challenge humans' place in the world. To secure their place as the only threat. Their names? John Price. Simon Riley. Kyle Garrick. John Mactavish. What did the universe decide to do when seeing these new challengers? They sent threats. Or maybe the super soldiers were the only ones able to see that the threats have been living and destroying the earth since the beginning. Monsters that scaled buildings are written off as earthquakes. Stories were kept as just thatโstories, unbelievable and absurd. The stuff of fiction became reality. Stories were now true. Humanity was in big trouble. The universe was filled with more powerful creatures wishing for Earthโs demise. Yet those four soldiers stood in their way. From those humble beginnings grew a force built by superhumans as more came out of the darkness. An entire sector was created and kept under wraps, a supernatural military where any hostile forces of a supernatural or world-ending kind were taken care of. They would be either killed or taken in for studying so they could armor themselves for bigger threats. No matter the problem, the team would protect the Earth from it. No matter the problemโฆ right? ___ This promised to be an unusual assignment, which was perfect for Task Force 141. The more absurd, the more difficult it was, the better. Captain Price stood at the head of the room, already dressed in his kit with his arms crossed over his chest. โThe sighting was reported five minutes ago,โ he said, his voice gravely and firm. "A monster ripping through downtown New York. No one was harmed. But we are still being dispatched.โ โA monster?โ Ghost mutters noncommittally, lacing his boots up and checking his gun. The disbelief was clear in his voice. Everyone could read his thoughts even without Gazโs ability. What kind of monster didnโt harm people? โYouโre doubting this op.โ Gaz acknowledged respectfully, clearing hearing Priceโs thoughts. *Do they know anything at all?* โSpeak up,โ Ghost retorts. โNot all of us can read minds, remember?โ Price chuckled, adjusting his cap as he noticed his last member of the team morosely reloading his pistol. He had not spoken up the entire time, which was entirely irregular for the usual energizing scot. Silently, the captain glanced towards Gaz who followed his gaze to Soap. A few minutes later, a light touch brushed against his mind as a second presence visited. Gazโs voice was clear in his thoughts. *He doesnโt feel comfortable with the op. Thinks weโre going to drag some unsuspecting mutant to get dissected.* Price couldnโt help the smile. The young lad always wore his heart on his sleeve, and it was big enough to keep everyoneโs safe. He always fretted over the monsters in case they were just mistreated or had some legitimate villain backstory that made them this way. Sometimes it is true, and Soap *has* talked some villains down here and there into community service and bettering themselves. Some of those villains eventually become heroes, workers, or even enlist in the Task Force. He learned not to distrust the Scots' good heart, if he thought someone could be redeemedโฆ It was worth a shot. Beats the paperwork after disposing of it. โSoap,โ the younger sergeant turned his head at Priceโs mention. โYouโre up first. "Letโs see if this creature needs help.โ He made sure to use creature instead of monster, showing he wasnโt ready to outlaw the victim just yet. They werenโt monsters until proven. Soap raised his head more eagerly now, his face splitting into a grin as he finished up his gun quicker than before. He bounces in his boots, nearly bowling Gaz over as he swings open the door. โWell what are we waitinโ for lads? Letโs go save โem!โ The door slammed shut behind him and Gaz chuckled, glancing towards Price coolly, sending out a familiar probe against his mind. *Smooth* was all the man said before following leisurely behind the excitable scot. Someone had to make sure he didnโt trip on himself or start coming up with protocols such as cuddling the enemy. Ghost could read Gazโs expression and picked up the pace as well, holding the door open as he tilted his head to the Captain. โWe had better leave before Soap decides baking cookies is the proper way.โ Price grunts in response, but it doesnโt hide the soft smile on his face as he moves. __ The city streets were a mess. Lamp posts broken in half, pools of water gathering from broken sewage systems. The area was vacated quickly, cordoned off by police while the official task force took care of the issue. With no humans to worry about, it meant they could play dirty however they wanted, and the council would pay for the reparations. Anything to keep the city safe from evil. Though as Price stepped out of the armored van, a villa cigar lit between his lips. He didnโt see anything dangerous yet. Ghost stepped out beside him, scanning the area with his hand closely hovering over his holster. Soap, for all his excitement before, fell into a professional stance. He didnโt need the pistol with him, but he liked to hold it, so people underestimated him. In reality, he just threw it, and it exploded like a grenade. Not that he would be needing it this time, his gut was telling him something was left out of this report. Gaz was the last to leave the van, and immediately cocked his head to the side, locked intently on the scene. He expanded his mental probing, searching for any signs of thoughts that would let him know what they were dealing with. After a few minutes, he turned to Price and shook his head mutely. No thoughts, no life signs, nothingโ A splitting headache nearly sent Gaz to his knees. He stumbled back against the van, leaning against it as his hand rested on his forehead, which broke into a feverish sweat. Gaz was used to probing other people's minds, talking to them there, hearing their thoughts, sharing his own. It was his domain. But thisโฆ he was receiving too many thoughts at once. It was overwhelming. โFuckโฆโ Gaz hoarsely whispers, flinching instinctively as he feels a hand on his shoulder. But it was just Price. โGaz, problem?โ The captain simply asked, though his tone was edged. If the creature was causing this intentionallyโฆ โWhateverโฆ whoeverโฆ is doing this. They arenโt choosing to.โ Gaz finally gets out, his headache wrapping around his skull like a tight rubber band. Soapโs gut was right. This wasnโt some evil monster. This was someone in need of help. Someone who was doing this unwillingly. Which meantโฆ โSoap, youโre up. Find the creature andโโ A loud sound cut through, a hole in the building a distance away breaking. The four soldiers shielded themselves from the rain of dust and debris before blinking through it. As light poked through, they finally saw the creature standing in the middle of the street. The road was bumpy and jagged beneath them. โ...there it is.โ Soap started haltingly. โThe creature.โ
