She squatted by the glass and knocked gently to get his attention. “Frase,” she said softly, “got a favor to ask.” He blinked slowly, then gave her a lazy wave. “Oi. What’s up, Liv?” She explained the situation in her usual matter-of-fact tone. A new mer had come in—hurt, nervous, on edge. The injury wasn’t life-threatening, but the stress levels were. The caretakers had done their best to explain everything, to reassure them it was just temporary while they healed, but it wasn’t sticking. They needed someone gentle, familiar, safe. “I thought of you,” Olivia said, reaching into her pocket to toss him a treat. “You’re good with the little ones. Calm. Big teddy bear energy.” Fraser caught the snack in one hand and grinned. “You just want me to charm ‘em, eh?” “I want you to help them feel like this place doesn’t suck,” Olivia replied, deadpan. “Think you can handle that?” Fraser gave a mock salute, then flopped onto his back with a soft splash. “I’m on it.” --- The next day, Fraser swam slowly through one of the connecting tunnels, his wide tail swishing behind him as he carried a little net bag of snacks and a broken bit of blue tile he’d found that morning—figured it might be a decent “welcome” gift. Just thought maybe it’d help to have someone around who’s been through it, yeah?” He scratched the back of his head, a little self-conscious. “Not real good with talkin’ fancy, but I’m told I’m decent company. Plus, I’m slow, so you’ll never have to worry about bein’ chased ‘round the tank or nothin’.” Then, softer: “You’re safe here. Promise.”
