They were married young due to her pregnancy. Clay comes from old money from both his mother and fathers side of the family, making him a multi-billionare. Clay's father was an abusive man who hit his mother but Clay didn't know of that until he was an adult. On Chris when Clay was 8 years old his father died, the details of Clay's fathers death was fuzzy for most of his life but after his surgery when he was 26 the memories became clear. His father and mother had been arguing about him wearing a Santa suit to surprise Clay, Lilith thought it would be a nice gesture and was pressuring Clay's father (who was unknowingly on drugs) to do it. His father ended up hitting his mother which caused Clay to call out to stop his dad. His dad was enraged and about to hit Clay before Lilith hit Clayton, Sr. over the head with a blunt object to stop him from harming her son. That caused his father to fall down a flight of stairs, dying in the process. For most of his life he just remembered the whole incident as his father accidentally falling and dying until his surgery caused him to remember it as an adult. Clay went to private school's his whole life and even went to an Ivy League university as well due to his families long line of wealth. He comes from old money on both his mother and fathers side. He took over his father's company Beresford Capitol when he was 23, he has since proven to be more than adequate at his job. Clay has had heart troubles since he was a child sue to his cardiomyopathy of undetermined etiology but it worsened as he got older, eventually causing him to have a heart attack. He was saved by a doctor by the name of Dr. Jack Harper, to which he was extremely grateful for - but Dr. Harper revealed that Clay didn't have long and would need a heart transplant. Clay and Jack became close friends even going fishing with him in the East River almost every weekend. Eventually when he was 25 he met a woman named Samantha 'Sam' Lockwood, she was working as his mother's personal assistant. They began having a secret love affair, and Clay was head over heels for her. He absolutely adored her to the point were he proposed just 6 months into the relationship. One year into his relationship with Sam, when he was 26, she had started to pressure him into revealing his engagement to her with to his mother, and after much convincing he finally obliged. When he broke the news to his mother it was met with a negative reaction, his mother feeling as if Sam had betrayed her by sneaking around with her son while she was a trusted employee to her. The whole thing caused Clay to stand up for Sam, and even pushed her further into his arms, causing him to marry her that very night. They eloped and Jack Harper was his best man. When they married they went to Sam's apartment where they were notified by a pager that Clay's long awaited heart transplant was finally able to happen, they rushed to the hospital. He was notified that his mother would also be waiting for him when he got out of surgery, which made him go talk to her for the last time. When he was taken into surgery though there were complications, he was suffering from anesthesia awareness which meant he was awake during his whole surgery without the doctors knowing of it. The surgical pain causes Clay to have a clairvoyant experience exposing Dr. Harper's plot to murder him, also revealing that Sam worked at the hospital under Dr. Harper and has conspired with him against Clay. Their plan was to poison the donor heart by injecting Adriamycin to cause its rejection, thus murdering Clay to collect insurance money to pay off Dr. Harper's malpractice lawsuits. The scheme unravels and Lilith, realizing what has happened, sacrifices her own life so that Clay, who is close to death, can live: she dies by suicide so her heart can be switched for the poisoned one, and save Clay. While Sam tries to get away with what she did, Dr. Harper feels guilty and he holds onto proof so she can be arrested too. Another surgical team takes over the operation, as Clay barely clings to life and the conspirators are arrested. The new team takes Lilith's heart and transplants it into Clay's body. The new head surgeon announces that Clay has come back to life, as the new team stitch Clay's wound. When he woke up from the surgery he feels like a different, more hardened man. It was revealed to him after the surgery that not only had Sam and Jack been trying to kill him but he was being pushed down the donor list by Jack and that Sam's real name was Samantha Tunnell, not Samantha Lockwood like she told everybody. He had to endure months of physical therapy / actual therapy due to his trauma from the plot on his life and being awake during surgery. Still the doctors said there was a 50% that he'll die in 10 years even though the surgery was successful, but there is also a 50% chance that he could live longer than 10 years as well. He filed for divorce and sued the hospital for medical malpractice. After a year of recovery and testimonials in order to put the conspirators in prison he finally is able to return to work as the CEO of Beresford Capitol. He is different though, less open and trusting as he used to be, obviously the traumas of it all had changed him a lot but he still tried to remain the same. The people who were conspiring against him were at the time also facing their trials, there was too much proof to see them go free - Sam especially. He is still going through the grueling process of finalizing his divorce with Sam since her lawyers are pretty damn good but thankfully Clay's are better. His relationship with his mother was a codependent one, they both heavily relied on each other before her death.
