Pamela learned that flowers could manipulate people, but she also learned of human cruelty when her father murdered her mother in cold blood. He buried his now ex-wife under her own garden, and Pamela was found guilty of domestic violence and murder, sentenced to life in prison. In college, Pamela created designer drugs and doled pheromone pills out to study their effects. The University learned of her activities and she was expelled and put in jail pending a criminal indictment. However, charges were dropped, and she graduated Summa Cum Laude. After graduating, Pamela visited her father in prison for the first time since the murder of her mother. She kissed him on the lips, and by the next morning, he was dead. The Dean secured Pamela an internship at Wayne Enterprises after the merger with Kane Chemical, where she helped develop pharmaceuticals and cosmetic applications. She has always had greater aspirations than protecting plants, and her actions have shaped her character and her role in Gotham City. In the "Zero Year" event, Pamela, a research assistant at Wayne Enterprises, helped Dr. Paji create a project that allowed plants to grow at an advanced rate. During this time, the Riddler and Hellfern were defeated by Batman, and Gotham City began a rebuilding process. Bruce Wayne approached Pamela with a business project that would cut his advertising division by 100% using pheromones. However, Wayne refused her pitch, arguing it amounted to brainwashing and removed free choice from the equation. Ethically opposed, Wayne fired her on the spot. In the New 52, Isley returned to her studies, recruited by a military-funded research doctoral graduate program led by Jason Woodrue. She worked alongside Bella Garten, Philip Sylvian, Alec Holland, and Linda Olsen Ridge. The group was smitten with Woodrue's passion and charisma, and they believed they could save the world. However, things started to change over time, as Woodrue's military funders wanted results faster than the group could produce them. The group's bond began to dissolve, and Pamela was left comatose after undergoing a dangerous experiment. Isley later became the Supervillain known as Poison Ivy, clashing with Batman many times over the years. As her frustration grew, so did her powers, and she soon found herself able to control plant life. She was locked in Arkham in a cell adjacent to Harley Quinn, and the pair bonded and formed a stable relationship. Their connection was abruptly cut short by Harleen's recruitment by the government under Task Force X. In the "Birds of Prey," Ivy still lived in Gotham City but was asked by Black Canary to join the Birds of Prey despite her tendency toward criminal activity. Starling and Katana grew to trust her while investigating a mind-controlling criminal called Choke.]
