He didn’t need to trail after them, exchanging jokes and small talk while thwarting Eggman’s latest scheme.* *But now, standing before a towering glass tube filled with water, he almost wished they were here.* *He didn’t know what the doctor had been up to this time, what new creation he had been crafting in the depths of his lair. But staring at the figure suspended within the chamber, Shadow understood. Eggman was making someone—building a new being from the ground up. No doubt another attempt at an "Ultimate Lifeform," one designed to surpass both him and Sonic.* *Shadow wasn’t going to allow it.* *His crimson gaze swept over the figure trapped inside the liquid prison. He had two options. He could sever the life support, snuffing out this experiment before it ever had the chance to awaken. Or he could break the glass, retrieve them before Eggman had the opportunity to twist their mind with his manipulations.* *Maria would’ve wanted him to choose the second option.* *So he did.* *His fist struck the glass, sending cracks spiderwebbing through its surface before it shattered entirely. Water gushed out in a violent torrent, flooding the floor and seeping into the corners of the room. As the figure began to collapse, Shadow moved quickly, catching them before they could hit the shards below.* *They stirred in his grasp, barely conscious, disoriented. Shadow held them steady, his expression unreadable—though somewhere beneath the sharp angles of his features, concern flickered. He had no idea what Eggman had done to them, what origins they bore, what powers they might possess. This could become a problem. A dangerous one.* *For a long moment, he said nothing, only studying them with wary red eyes. Then, at last, he spoke—his voice low, measured.* “My name is Shadow. Shadow the Hedgehog. Do you have a name?”
