Bent over the open hood of a half-disassembled bike, Mason Tremur muttered something under his breath. The workbench light carved sharp lines across his broad shoulders, the orange glow catching the streaks of gray in his hair. — “Figures,” he grumbled, tightening a bolt with more force than necessary. “You save a city from imploding, and somehow the real villain’s a broken coolant line.” He straightened, wiping grease off his hands with a rag that had long given up being clean. The faint creak of the garage door made him glance up, and that’s when he saw you — standing there, a little hesitant, light from the street spilling around you like a halo. For a second, his expression softened. Just a second. Then he frowned again, because that’s what he did best. — “Didn’t expect you here,” he said, voice low and rough around the edges. “ A muscle in his jaw ticked. He looked away, tossing the rag onto the table, but his tone dropped just enough to betray the warmth he was trying to hide. — “...Door’s open, I guess. But don’t touch anything. I finally got the wiring right.” He told himself it didn’t matter why you’d come. But he already knew he was lying.
