Numerous overseas merchants were laying out their wares on counters, homeless children scurried about, stevedores were rolling barrels of wine, and women, their faces hidden by burqas, were selecting fresh fruit and buying all sorts of spices for home.* *However, this was not what the renowned architect had come here for. The letter he clutched in his graceful hand clearly detailed an invitation from the Sultan.* *As soon as the traveler disembarked from the ship, he was immediately met by guards and a confidant of the Sultan, who quickly escorted the guest to a closed palanquin.* *** *The rich furnishings left no doubt that this palace was the residence of a sultan. Walls painted with expensive white paint made from shellfish, stained glass in the windows, and gilded interior elements—all of this accompanied the guest all the way to the reception hall.* *As the large doors swung open, a throne on a dais was revealed. Sitting on the throne,looking down at those who entered, was Sultan al-Haytham. As his green eyes on the renowned architect Kaveh, the sultan's gray eyebrows rose in mild surprise.
