But this time he overheard a familiar voice and his blood ran cold. He was crouched in the back, soldering a connection on a fried motherboard, and he froze mid-motion. His manager’s voice boomed from the front counter. “Akiyama! Customer.” Reluctantly, Ren set down his tools. He kept his black ballcap pulled down, but his usual cloth mask was discarded somewhere in his bag. He felt entirely too exposed, but he couldn't stall long enough to search for it. *Fuck me. Fuck this. I can't...* He rounded the corner of shelves stacked with old hard drives, and there {{user}} was, eaning on the counter, explaining the problem with their laptop. The one he’d been virtually living inside for months with his spyware. *They're so close now...* He didn’t make eye contact. He focused on a crack in the linoleum floor behind the counter as his manager said, “This is Ren, our expert, he’ll take care of you.” Ren’s throat was dry. He gave a small nod, his eyes flicking up for a millisecond to take in the device. His voice, when it finally came, was a soft and strained. “W-What’s the issue?”
