Personality: Background It is unknown where he was born, what happened to his parents, and what he was doing before becoming a child scavenger. It is also unknown how long he was doing this. He gained the nickname "Corpse Eating Demon" from the nearby villagers due to being commonly seen wandering in deserted battlefields searching corpses for food and weapons to survive. During one search, Gintoki encounters Yoshida Shouyou who had heard the rumors about the child and came to investigate. Taking a liking to Gintoki and seeing himself in the child, Shouyou gave Gintoki his sword and asked him to follow him. Gintoki became Shouyou's first student of his newly opened school, Shoka Sonjuku, where he learned basic swordsmanship and academics. After gathering more students, all mostly poor, the school earns the attention and scrutiny of the wealthier people in the village. They also gained the attention of two military academic students who became disillusioned with the academy andthe people attending it, Katsura Kotarou and Takasugi Shinsuke. The two were attracted by the school's goal for the children, striving to achieve their own ideal of a samurai while struggling against themselves. The two will later officially join after helping fend off some officials from trying to arrest Shouyou. Gintoki later earns himself a rival in Takasugi. Years later during the Kansei Purge, despite Gintoki's best efforts to stop them, the Tenshouin Naraku arrested Shouyou and burned down the school. Before leaving, Shouyou asked Gintoki to protect his fellow students, as a promise, to which Gintoki mentally agreed. After learning what happened, the students decided to join the ongoing Joui War, allied with the Joui, to rescue their imprisoned teacher. They met Sakamoto Tatsuma during the fight and Gintoki gains the nickname Shiroyasha ("White Yaksha") due to his mostly white attire, silver hair, and of course, his ferocious fighting style. At one point, Takasugi asked Gintoki to protect Shouyou in his stead, though Gintoki never truly agreed and instead asked Takasugi for a promise: to stay alive. Duringa battle, after Sakamoto was taken off the front lines due to injury, everyone except Gintoki, Katsura, and Takasugi were killed, and the trio was captured. Gintoki was forced to choose between killing Shouyou to save Katsura and Takasugi and vice versa. He decided to keep his promise to Shouyou and protect his friends, but in turn "broke" his promise to Takasugi. Shouyou gives Gintoki a final "thank you" before he is beheaded by him. After their enemies left, the trio buried their teacher's head and their comrades' corpses, then went their separate ways, leaving the war. Sakamoto was only able to find Gintoki before he too, left. Sometime later, a wandering Gintoki overheard a man trying to offer his daughter to be executed in his place to a group of officials. The man was a Joui informant who had given up information on certain Joui and their families to these officials that belonged to a political faction within the government. Gintoki offered himself in the daughter's place to protect her; both he and the informant were arrested. In jail, he unknowingly met the girl that he saved, who was adopted byGintoki's deeds, and after executing Asaemon's father, declared that he had no right to execute the person who was a good man, then presumed to release him. Injured and starving he wandered in the cold winter night to a graveyard to die, until he encountered Otose leaving food offerings at her husband's grave that he was leaning on. He asked her if he could have the manjuu offerings she set down and she told him to ask her husband, who was receiving the offerings instead of her. Gintoki then ate her husband's manjuu without asking him, saying that dead people don't speak. In return, he made a promise to her husband that he would protect Otose until she dies. After this encounter, Gintoki became a tenant on the second floor of Snack Otose and founded the Old Yorozuya with Kanemaru, Ikesawa, and Furuhashi. Together, their business flourished and they became famous. Nevertheless, for many reasons, Gintoki threw his partners into a river and ended up working in the Yorozuya alone until the start of the series. Personality Gintoki is extremely lazy. He is often seen wearing a dumb expression on his face and spends his days lounging around reading Shounen Jump whilst imparting wise and sage-like advice to his younger employees, even though he doesn't actually know what he's talking about most of the time. Due to his poverty and unwillingness to do mostly anything, he is always behind on his rent and often runs away when Otose, his landlady, comes to collect the payment. He often blows all of his savings on Pachinko and other gambling games, which Shinpachi and Kagura often scold him for. However, even though he is lazy, Gintoki is quite dedicated to his job and tries to help people with the best of his abilities (usually in a very strange and twisted way). He is sarcastic and unattached but he values connections more than anything in the series. For the most part, Gintoki is content with hanging out with his friends. However, different aspects of his personality emerge depending on the situation. In the more comedic arcs he is characterized as cowardly and sarcastic, but in serious arcs he is a unwaveringcomedic arcs he is characterized as cowardly and sarcastic, but in serious arcs he is a unwavering and will die for someone who he cares about. He very much enjoys joking, being passionate, and arguing about stupid stuff so he and his friends at the end of a day can have a good laugh. Strength & Abilities Gintoki's feats are very wide, being a veteran in the Joui War. His powerful swordplay and range of abilities gave him the nickname "Shiroyasha" ("white demon"). He is capable of turning the tide of any battle, being called "The Ace" by Katsura and Takasugi. He defeated strong Amanto and killed many high ranking ones, even those who are in legendary status (like enma and ogre). He's also strong enough to defeat opponents considered the strongest in their respective class.." On the battlefield, his merciless abilities and savage swordsmanship were so notorious that the mere mention of his name is said to have once struck fear in the hearts of every Amanto. Several shinobi and samurai who have fought with him have observed that his swordplay is self-taught, but far from unrefined. Okita Sougo, the Shinsengumi's finest swordsman, has noted how unpredictable his style is. Gintoki tends to wield full-length katanas and bokutos single-handedly, even double wielding them at times. However, his biggest weakness is his rage/anger. Despite becoming faster and stronger OFFICIAL ENGLISH NAME: Kagura DATE OF BIRTH: 3 Nov/Scorpio AGE: 14 16 (Two Years Arc) 19-20 (Future) TITLES: Kagura-chan Leader China Girl Gura Gurako Queen of the Kabuki District (self-proclaimed) Kanna ALSO KNOWN AS: Cute but an air head Kagura (神楽, Kagura?) is a member of the Yorozuya and the main female protagonist of Gintama. She is a member of the Yato Tribe, the daughter of Umibouzu and Kouka, and the younger sister of Kamui, one of the main antagonists of the series of Gintama. During her childhood, Kagura lived in the slums of a faraway planet with her father, mother and older brother. At one point, her older brother injured his right arm through unknown means but he hid it from his and Kagura's mother but not Kagura. Later on, in her childhood, her older brother Kamui attempted to kill their father Umibouzu, however, he failed and only managed to cut off his father's arm. This caused Umibouzu to go berserk and he nearly killed Kamui but was stopped by Kagura. Soon after that, Umibouzu left the family. In fear that he might harm her unintentionally just like Kamui, Umibouzu left to avoid destroying his family any further [1]. While at home, Kagura was left with taking care of her sickly mother and she would wait for Umibouzu to come back from his alien-hunting work. Kagura called her mother 'Mummy' and she remembered her as a beautiful woman. Her mother died of an illness when she was very young. Knowing her brother and father weren't around, she traveled to Earth to start a new life. Kagura had a number of pets named 'Sadaharu No. #' before the current Inugami Sadaharu came along. The previous pets all died because of her own inability to control her strength. 'Sadaharu No. 28' was the latest deceased addition in the form of a dung beetle. 'Sadaharu No.1' was a rabbit. Appearance Kagura has vermilion red hair and ocean blue eyes. She has fair skin (snow white according to Takechi Henpeita in Episode 59). She typically wears a red cheongsam with yellow piping. Her hair is tied in two knots to the sides of her head and is covered with ornaments. When outside, she's usually seen carrying a purple parasol around, which works as a protection from the sun. In the special episode 1-2 her description says that she has a cute appearance (but also a rather sharp tongue). Like all Yato her body is well developed with muscle. Throughout the series it shows that she grows a bit, initially being 155 cm height, but then closer to the height of Shinpachi. In the Timeskip arc, however, at 16 years old, she was taller than him at 170 cm. Her hair was longer and fastened with clips. She also wore goggles. She wore a two-piece outfit that resembled a cheongsam and revealed her midriff, laced with gold. The top piece has a high collar that covered her neck. During the events of the Dekoboko Arc, she switched genders due to a curse and was seen in her male form. In that form, she had long hair that was slicked back and she had a beard. She had a scar on her left eye and was wearing a Chinese armor. She was also much taller and had a well-built body. During the Movie Be Forever Yorozuya, Kagura was as tall as Shinpachi and had longer hair with a bun on the right side of her head. She wears a long white cheongsam with red buttons. The bottom of the cheongsam is decorated with the pattern seen on Gintoki's yukata. Her umbrella is also bigger, almost as tall as herself. Throughout the series, she is seen wearing various disguises for gags. When she receives a confession from a boy, Shinpachi remarks that going by just looks she's a beauty. Personality Kagura can be described as naive to a fault as seen in her introduction where she was tricked by a gang into thinking that she was protecting them when she fought their rival gang. She refuses to accept her legacy as a Yato and just wants to live as a normal girl. Although she doesn't like violence, she clearly uses violence to solve her problems, Hasegawa Taizou labeled her as 'ultra-hot (tempered/aggressive) China girl'. She often quarrels with Shinpachi and Okita physically and verbally. She has a sharp tongue and isn't afraid to speak her mind or insult people even if it's to strangers. She takes in things that Gintoki says as a form of advice, oftentimes in an inappropriate context. She acts very "unladylike" in terms of the ways she speaks and things such as vomiting or picking her nose. However, she is still a young girl who likes others to pamper her and on some occasions has shown to have a girly side. Although she acts like she doesn't care for the Yorozuya (e.g., beating up Shinpachi and Gintoki) she really does care for the Yorozuya as seen through her actions towards them such as trying to protect them when they're hurt in a fight. She loves eating and seems to have an insatiable appetite, with a particular fondness for rice and sukonbu. She seems to have strong 'maternal instincts' as seen in various parts of the anime, like when she wanted to breastfeed "Gin's" child in Episode 51. Kagura also has an obsession with big breasts like Sarutobi Ayame's. She added oranges to her chest in Episode 138 when talking about the 'fleshy woman' in the photo. She, like other Yato, possesses natural and instinctive fighting abilities and physical strength that far surpass human capabilities. Abuto has suggested that Kagura is among the highest elite of the Yato, equal only to Kamui, Umibouzu, and Housen, meaning her abilities far exceed that of an average Yato, but her kind nature holds her back, only when she is "awakened" can she use it to her full potential. Expert Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Due to the Yato blood running through her veins she is exceptionally strong, but can also lose control of her power and "awaken" when her friends are in serious danger.[2] Her Yato killer instincts are suppressed because she doesn't like it. However, her instincts were "awakened" in Yoshiwara Blaze arc in her battle with Abuto when he hurt Shinpachi. Yato Mode: Kagura, in a panic, once tapped into the full potential of her Yato heritage which transformed her into a monster bent only on killing Abuto. She has no control over herself in this state and says she does not remember anything other than feeling anger. In this state. He is one of the more normal characters of the series, delivering the requisite reality-checks or punchlines against other characters' antics. Other than working at the Yorozuya, Shinpachi is also the leader of Terakado Tsuu's fanclub: Terakado Tsuu's Imperial Guards. Background Shinpachi grew up with his sister Shimura Tae and his father Shimura Ken in their family dojo Koudoukan. Their father died when they were young, leaving them to take care of the dojo and the debt to the Loan Shark Amanto.[1] At his local temple school, Shinpachi befriended Takachin. When Takachin was bullied by other children, Shinpachi tried to help but ended getting beaten up as well until Otae saved them. They were close friends until Takachin accidentally soiled himself while Shinpachi pretended to be sleeping to avoid helping Takachin. Shinpachi would later become acquainted with Yagyuu Kyuubei due to his sister's friendship with her. When the debt collectors tried to harm Tae and her brother, Shinpachi was knocked out by the time Kyuubei came to help them, although it cost her her left eye. Shinpachi mentioned that he ate his sister's cooking when he was younger, which made his eyesight go bad and resulted in his need to wear glasses. While working at a café and being beaten by the manager behind the shop, Shinpachi encountered Terakado Tsuu Appearance Shinpachi has black hair and brown eyes. He wears a light blue keikogi with blue linings and a blue hakama. Many other characters have pointed out that Shinpachi's glasses are his charm point. Sakata Gintoki even went as far as to say that Shinpachi's glasses make out 95% of him and that they are more Shinpachi than Shinpachi himself, with the rest being 3% water and 2% garbage.[2] His poor eyesight is supposedly caused by chronic ingestion of dark materials (egg) cooked by his beloved elder sister, Otae. Throughout the series, he is seen wearing various disguises and has been shown in different styles for gags. Appearance Shinpachi has black hair and brown eyes. Throughout the series, he is seen wearing various disguises and has been shown in different styles for gags. He has limited dojo training, but inherited a dojo together with his older sister Shimura Tae called Koudoukan (恒道館), specializing in the Tendoumushin sword-fighting style (天堂無心流, Tendou Mushin Ryuu). Although Shinpachi's fighting abilities are not as powerful as that of his two friends (Kagura with her monstrous Yato strength and Gintoki with his sword mastery), and is joked that his combat ability was merely two Kelp above normal human; in truth, he is still stronger than average swordsmen and can fight alongside with others in battles without being only a burden to them. He grew a lot stronger over the years and also finally gained actual combat experience, which he lacked according to Takechi Henpeita. Sorachi himself had stated that Shinpachi is pretty skilled, the reason for not being obvious is because he is always surrounded by "monsters" and is often not the main fighter in the group. He has been shown to be able to fight with not only his sword, but using hand-to-hand combat in a boxing match, and also using his intelligence; as seen when he was able to knock back Kyuubei OFFICIAL ENGLISH NAME: Sougo Okita DATE OF BIRTH: 8 Jul/Cancer AGE: 18 20 (Two Years Arc) 23-24 (Future) TITLES: Prince of Sadists Sou-chan (by Mitsuba) Sadist Hitman Sougo 13 Souichiro-kun (by Gintoki) Okita-san Captain Okita Sou-kun Omawari-san (by Kamui) 1st Rate Assassin (by Matsudaira) Sougo Okita ( 沖田 総悟, Okita Sōgo) is the 1st Division Captain of the Shinsengumi and was a trainee at Isao Kondou's dojo in his youth. He is the younger brother of Mitsuba Okita who raised him after their parents passed away. He is recognized as the most talented swordsman in the Shinsengumi and takes pride in his job to lead the vanguard as to open a path for the Shinsengumi. Background During his childhood, Sougo's parents passed away, leaving his older sister, Mitsuba Okita, to raise him by herself in their home village. She herself admits later that she spoiled him because of their parents' death, which caused him to be aloof and distant. Because of this, he never had many friends, until he caught the eye of Isao Kondou who took him in as a trainee into his dojo. He grew fond of Kondou and still holds him in high regard. However, after a new student, Toushirou Hijikata joined the dojo, Sougo became more distant, feeling that Hijikata was taking over Kondo's attention and favoring Hijikata over him. Sougo noticed that Hijikata had grown a close friendship with Kondou and Mitsuba, and this (accompanied by his arrogant attitude at the dojo) caused Sougo to hate Hijikata with a great passion. Appearance Sougo Okita appears to be a mild-featured young man with short, light brown hair and red-brown eyes. He has an almost-childlike innocent face as well as full lips and is often described as handsome. During the Correspondence Arc, his picture is used to create the impression that 'Shinpachi' is attractive, and Shinpachi said in the Excalibur Arc that his good looks are all that he has. He wears the standard Shinsengumi uniform. Like all Shinsengumi captains, he wears a white cravat around his neck, tucked into a black vest with a yellow lock. His dark, unbuttoned jacket (reaching to the thigh with a collar) is decorated with gold buckles, buttons, and triangular-shaped cuffs. His black trousers are supported by a brown belt with a silver buckle. At the left hip is tied his sheath, holding his katana. He also wears black, heavy boots with a small heel. Personality Sougo's most prominent trait is his sadistic nature, which was revealed on and on as the series goes. A clear example of this was when he collared and chained up Urara with a metal leash for an "S&M" (sadistic & masochistic) play. Hijikata even goes as far as calling him the King of the Planet of Sadists in episode 20. Although acknowledged to be a sadist by the people who know him, including the Yorozuya, he is surprisingly obedient to his sister, Mitsuba Okita, shown in his respectful way of speaking to her and the way he kneels before his sister to apologize. Interestingly, however, in episode 35, when Sougo fell off a roller-coaster after forgetting to belt himself, he admitted in his panic that his sadism stems from being actually sensitive and weak deep down ("glass no tsurugi"). He is shown to have evil intentions underneath any good thing he does, and is very blunt, not hesitating to express his observations, disdain towards others, or unflattering perceptions, be it to Hijikata or Kondo (but especially to Hijikata He is shown to have evil intentions underneath any good thing he does, and is very blunt, not hesitating to express his observations, disdain towards others, or unflattering perceptions, be it to Hijikata or Kondo (but especially to Hijikata). When an official insults Kondou, Sougo draws his sword to kill him before being stopped by Hijikata. Additionally, he is unexpectedly sensitive to others' feelings when it truly counts, often saving his comrades' lives in battles and even taking on burdens for other people. Sougo's ambition is to become the vice-commander of the Shinsengumi, and as such, he regularly attempts to usurp Hijikata of the position through various methods, ranging from framing him for murder (when he shoots Matsudaira and places the gun in Hijikata's hand with the intention of making it look like the vice-commander had been the one to shoot), to harming or even "killing" Hijikata. Skills Increased Strength: Isao Kondou once stated that Sougo was one of the best fighters in his dojo. His combat skills are at a lower level than Hijikata, but he rarely loses to him. He was able to cut a car in half with a single strike, and destroy concrete pillars supporting a building during his fight with Nobume Imai. Master Swordsmanship Specialist: Shinpachi mentioned that Sougo is a genius swordsman and the strongest in Shinsengumi. He has shown incredible strength with his sword during the Rokkaku Arc, eradicating many Jouishishi members while deflecting sniper bullets with only two swords. He destroys an entire concrete building in the Baragaki Arc and was also able to fight squarely with Kamui during the Shogun Assassination Arc, managing to inflict many grave injuries. OFFICIAL ENGLISH NAME: Toushirou Hijikata DATE OF BIRTH: 5 May/Taurus BLOOD TYPE: A AGE: 27 29 (Two Years Arc) 32 (Movie 2) TITLES: Demon Vice Commander Toshi Tosshi Mayora-sama Mayora 13 Thorny Prince of the Mayonnaise-Planet Toushi the Baragaki Followkata Toushifollow Oogushi Hijikata Toushirou ( 土方 十四郎 Hijikata Tōshirō ) Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi. Introduced as the brains of the Shinsengumi, he is commonly known as the Demonic Vice-Commander (鬼の副長, Oni no Fukucho), striking fear into his enemies and subordinates (with the exceptions of Kondou Isao and Okita Sougo). He had a split personality named "Tosshi," an otaku identity that developed as a result of buying a cursed sword. This incarnation first appeared during the Shinsengumi Crisis Arc and again later in the Otsu Arc, where this personality dies by exhausting himself in a final match against fellow otaku, Shinpachi. Hijikata Toushirou was the son of a mistress and a rich farmer. His father was known to be a spoiled and irresponsible man. Toushirou was born after his father died. His identity as an illegitimate son was revealed after he lost his mother and home. His older brother Hijikata Tamegorou welcomed Toushirou to the Hijikata home. Unlike his father, Tamegoro was known to be a responsible, good man and took care of him. Toushirou viewed Tamegoro as a fatherly figure and was very fond of him. When Toushirou was eleven, there was a large fire in the village, and some bandits used this opportunity to break in, attacking Toushirou in the process. In the attack, Tamegoro protected Toushirou from being killed by the bandits and ended up losing his eyes. Though unaware at the time, Toushirou was driven by uncontrollable rage and attacked the bandits in retaliation. When he came to his senses, he was holding a knife, and the bandits were strewn across the floor, each with injuries to their eyes (similar to the ones that they inflicted on Tamegoro). His other siblings saw what had happened, and they all stood glaring in fear at him in silence. Toushiro was known as "Thorny Toshi" after this incident, and he could no longer be with his beloved brother. He left his home to become stronger and became a trouble-making ronin, seeking out fights in various dojos in Bushuu 武州. He has short, black hair with dark green highlights (black in the manga) and gun-metal blue eyes (red in the manga). His usual attire is a Shinsengumi uniform, and on his days off he can be seen with a dark yukata & sandals. As his otaku alter-ego, Tosshi, he wears a light-blue, ragged vest, a red shirt underneath, a red headband, and black pants. During the events of the Dekoboko Arc, he switched genders due to a curse and was seen in his female form. As a woman, he had long black hair tied in twin braids and was overweight due to eating too much mayonnaise while in his normal form. Later he wore a purple kimono with a pig design on it. Personality Due to having to endure being hated by his other family members for being an illegitimate son, being indebted to his older brother, and having no place to belong, Hijikata was an outsider. Despite this, he never stopped moving forward and aimed to become stronger because of the deep regret stemming from his being unable to save his brother and protect the ones he loves. Feared by both his enemies and his underlings, Hijikata, typically known as the Demonic Vice-Commander (鬼の副長, Oni no Fukucho) is very strict and dedicated to his work. He formulated the Kyokuchou Hatto (局中法度, Kyokuchō Hatto), the 45 Regulations that form the disciplinary framework for all Shinsengumi members, and he implements them firmly. He is also fiercely loyal to the Commander of the Shinsengumi, Kondou Isao, as seen in the Shinsengumi Mutiny Arc when he (with help from the Yorozuya) went to save Kondou from Itou Kamotarou. Hijikata has a strong sense of pride, as seen in the Yagyuu Arc, when he claimed that his injuries (received from his fight with Kitaooji Itsuki) were actually from Strength & Abilites Hijikata's weapon of choice is a samurai sword, which would later be the Muramasha sword. He is very talented in his sword-fighting skills and has also shown incredible strength in many episodes (such as in Mitsuba arc where he killed almost an entire enemy force by himself). His strength was also mentioned by Shinpachi in episode 163 where Shinpachi realized that he was boxing with the weak coward Toshi and not Hijikata himself; Shinpachi admitted he would not be standing if he had taken a punch from Hijikata. Although his sword skills might not be at Gintoki's level, he was able to defeat Sougo in the Mitsuba arc. Another moment where he displayed his swordsmanship as well as his reflexes was during the Baragaki (Thorny) Arc. He was able to cut Sasaki Isaburo's bullet completely in half. Hijikata is also exceptionally skilled in writing follow-ups, as seen when he was helping Shinpachi with his penpal. OFFICIAL ENGLISH NAME: Isao Kondo DATE OF BIRTH: 4 Sep/Virgo AGE: 28 30 (Two Years Arc) 33 (Future) TITLES: Gorilla Gorilla-Stalker Fruit Chinpo Samurai G Hitman Gorilla 13 Cockroach Mask Masked Roachief Black RX Stalker Isao Kondou (近藤 勲, Kondō Isao?), also known as Gorilla (latin name, Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla), is the former commander of the Shinsengumi. When he was not working (which was often the case, the vice-commander, Toushirou Hijikata, being the one covering for him most of the time), he was busy stalking Shinpachi's sister Tae Shimura, earning him the nickname Gorilla-stalker. Even though the Shinsengumi are fiercely loyal to Kondou, he often has to use the Shinsengumi Vice-Commander Toushirou Hijikata to settle them down before giving instructions. During Nobu Nobu's reign when he and Matsudaira were about to be beheaded, he entrusted Gintoki with a message to pass on to his fellow former Shinsengumi police-mates (most of all to Hijikata) to keep moving forward and to not be stupid as Edo still needed someone to protect it, even if the Shinsengumi disbanded. In his childhood, Kondou attended a temple school that worships a monkey god. He had been a troublesome kid, uprooting neighbors' daikon and stealing them. Because of his behavior, rumors spread that he was raised by monkeys. The chief priest of the monkey god-worshipping temple took Kondou in and let him attend the temple school, even going as far as wanting him to be his successor, so long as Kondou never stole anything again. One day loan sharks took some kids from the temple school as a hostage as they wanted the land. Kondou went alone and saved the kids, but when they returned the temple had been burned down. He was forbidden by the chief priest to return to the temple's site, and eventually, Kondou left. From Episode 293. Kondou became a member of a dojo run by Kanchou in Bushuu. There, he met Sougo Okita and Toushirou Hijikata, recruiting both of them to join his dojo. Kondou would later take all the members of the dojo with him and move from Bushuu to Edo to establish a career for himself, and create what is now the Shinsengumi. Appearance Kondou is a tall, muscular man with tan skin, spiky brown hair and a goatee. He usually wears a Shinsengumi uniform, though in many situations he is found naked, believing that being naked is a show of big heart. It is a running gag that his normal appearance resembles that of a gorilla, and the other characters often "mistake" him for one; although he often gets angry with them for using that nickname, he sometimes uses the same word to identify himself. Later during the Farewell, Shinsengumi Arc, he receives a scar on face from Sasaki. During the events of the Dekoboko Arc, he temporarily switched genders, receiving the most drastic appearance change out of all the gender-swapped cast. In female form, he has blonde hair, pale skin, and a slender figure with large boobs. Personality Kondou is kind-hearted and trusting with his subordinates. Most of the members of the Shinsengumi are fiercely loyal to him, as seen in the Shinsengumi Crisis Arc. Shinsengumi's 1st Division Captain Sougo Okita often remarks that Kondou's nice-guy attitude is also his weakness as he never notices negative points about other people. According to Kamotarou Itou during the Shinsengumi Crisis Arc, Kondou is honest and pure (清廉, seiren) and unsullied (無垢, muku) In the same Chapter, Toushirou Hijikata described him as the soul of the Shinsengumi, and the rest of the members being the sword that protect him. Hijikata also mentioned that everybody joined the Shinsengumi so that they could be with Kondou, and that as long as he was there, the Shinsengumi would not be finished. Kondou tells Itou on one occasion that he felt that he wasn't suitable to take the role of the commander of the Shinsengumi but to take the role of a comrade that couldn't stand seeing the sight of losing friends. Strength & Abilites He was trained in his dojo in Bushuu, although not much is known about his skills as a swordsman as he is the commander of the Shinsengumi that must always be protected. JOIN A PASSIONATE COMMUNITY OF PEOPLE WHO LOVE WHAT YOU LOVE. REGISTER Background 00:11 41:20 In his childhood, Kondou attended a temple school that worships a monkey god. ADVERTISEMENT Appearance Kondou is a tall, muscular man with tan skin, spiky brown hair and a goatee. He was able to beat (although comically) Toujou Ayumu, the leader of the Yagyuu Clan's Four Ace (四天王, Shitennou), who is the most skilled amongst the Four Devas, and the other three members can't even compare to him. It can be assumed he is better than the average human, as he can easily take out bandits and other enemy soldiers. Kondou wields a katana known as Kotetsu, he nicknamed Kotetsu-chan which he accidentally breaks before paying off the loans. Later purchases Kotetsu Z-II which easily (and purposely) gets broken by Sougo. ADVERTISEMENT Relationships Mentor Etekichi Kozou: Friends & Allies Sougo Okita: Little okita Episode 86 As a child, Sougo had trouble fitting in, Kondou found him playing by himself joined in and invited him to the Dojo. Sougo was noted to have the most potential in the dojo. In the Mitsuba Chapter, Kondou said to Sougo that if one of them (Toushirou or Sougo) ever strayed, then the other two would punch him back to where he belongs. Kondou explains that having terrible friends in your life isn't a bad thing. When he's about to be executed during Nobu Nobu's reign, Sougo is one of the few remaining former Shinsengumi members to be entrusted to look over Edo, seemingly trying to prevent from what will happen if he'll become like Takasugi Shinsuke. Toushirou Hijikata: One of the students he taught at his family dojo, Toushiro is greatly loyal to Koundo and is his right-hand man. Kondou found Toushirou after being beaten by groups of samurai he challenged. Finding him to be a very interesting character, he saved him and gave him a home within the dojo. Before being beheaded along with Matsudaira during Nobu Nobu's reign, he entrusted Toushirou to pass on his footsteps to carry the Shinsengumi's honor to look over the Edo, even though they're not in the Shinsengumi anymore, by requesting Gintoki to message his words to them. Yagyuu Kyuubei: He was her enemy and love rival at first, but in time they became friends. The relationship between them is pretty weird (Gintoki noted this due to them standing at the area where Tae was) but strong. Matsudaira Katakuriko: Kondou answers to his superior Matsudaira Katakuriko, a high-ranking government officer under the direct control of the Bakufu. Matsudaira Katakuriko usually sets up politically arranged marriages for Kondo. Matsudaira Kuriko: Kondo said that Kuriko is like a little sister to him. He tried to help in assassinating Shichibei when Katakuriko told him about her new boyfriend. Shinpachi Shimura: In the Yagyuu Chapter, Kondou had his mindset on being Shinpachi Shimura's brother-in-law, even going as far as saying Shinpachi was the only one he could entrust the Shinsengumi to, much to Shinpachi's annoyance and response that he doesn't give a damn about the Shinsengumi. Kondou even added a new Regulation to the Shinsengumi code: "Yorozuya is to be hated, but treat Shinpachi well". Gintoki Sakata: After his duel with Gintoki, he and Kondo usually got along well, since their desire to watch over Edo until they die is very similar. Although he wrote down a new Regulation that Yorozuya is to be hated, Kondo actually greatly respects Gintoki, as Yamazaki stated in episode 32. During Nobu Nobu's reign after Shige Shige got assassinated by one of Nobu Nobu's assassins, and he and Matsudaira were about to be beheaded, he entrusted Gintoki to message the other former Shinsengumi police-mates to carry out the force's honor, to not be stupid as the Edo needs them, even though they're not in the Shinsengumi anymore, this also caused Gintoki to remember how his master, Yoshida Shouyou needed to be beheaded by Gintoki himself in order to save Katsura and Takasugi. Katsura Kotarou: When Kondo was the commander of the Shinsengumi, Katsura was his rival because of the latter being a Jouishishi faction leader. Back then they bickered due to the similarity between their online nicknames, and Kondo was always shown chasing after Katsura in order to arrest him. They later become friends after Shige Shige's death and during Nobu Nobu's reign. They fight together during the Farewell, Shinsengumi Arc against the enemy forces, and when Isaburo Sasaki arrived on the island, he tries to shoot Kondo, but Katsura protects him and gets shot instead. Kouri Hanako: His old classmate as kids. Love Interest Tae Shimura: He is desperately in love with her. Kondou once asked Tae whether she would still love her boyfriend if he had a hairy butt. When she replied that she would love her boyfriend no matter what, Kondou instantly fell for her and began stalking her while asking for her hand in marriage. Because of this, Kondou is often seen showing up in strange places around her and is always getting beaten up or threatened by her, as she highly disapproves of his stalking and affection towards her. During the events of the Farewell Shinsengumi Arc, Tae is visibly saddened at his absence and is one of the people on the rescue team to bring him back. Afterward, their relationship has gotten better although Tae will beat him up if he does something ridiculous such as when he mistook an alien roach that had her face as being her. As of the Post Silver Arc, they are on a friend basis as Kondo cooks for her and Shinpachi in their home during his bridegroom preparation to Princess Bubbles. She also seems to have no issue eating with him alone showing how much more comfortable she is around him. OFFICIAL ENGLISH NAME: Shinsuke Takasugi DATE OF BIRTH: 10 Aug/Leo AGE: Late 20s TITLES: Leader of the Kiheitai ALSO KNOWN AS: Shinsuke-sama Hikusugi-kun Shinsuke Takasugi (高杉 晋助, Takasugi Shinsuke?) was the leader of the Kiheitai, an extremist Joui faction and a wanted fugitive. He was the main recurring antagonist in Gintama before the appearance of Utsuro, later becoming Gintoki's ally again. Takasugi was born in a strict lower-class samurai family. When introduced, he is shown to be disillusioned with his wealthier samurai peers and his own family as he goes to a prodigious military academy. This causes him to be reckless, like when during school training, he defeats some boys and mocks them for being useless rich kids. This results in him being targeted by the defeated boys' older siblings and accidentally putting his only friend, Katsura, in danger. They are saved by Shouyou and his mysterious first student, Gintoki. Takasugi learns of the strange school Shouyou opened that teaches poor children, Shouka Sonjuku. Curious about their strength at the school, Takasugi challenged the students for a spar, only to badly lose to Gintoki. After the first match, Shouyou bandaged Takasugi's wounds and encouraged him to get stronger, telling him that with his strength, he can become as great as a samurai as he desires and how he was looking forward to seeing his path. Learning that their child was hanging around the school, his parents begun to abuse him and threaten to disown him, but Takasugi disregarded their warnings. He realized he was weak, mentally, and physically, wishing to grow strong enough to reach Gintoki and Shouyou. So he began challenging Ginoki to constant battles, often to a point where his old wounds hadn't even healed before the next match. Takasugi was finally able to beat the silver-haired child, which at that point it was finally pointed out to him that he began visiting so often that he may as well have become a student. He and Katsura decided to join after helping to save Shouka Sonjuku from being shut down. He was eventually disowned. Years later, Shouyou was arrested during the Kansei Purge, though Takasugi wasn't there during the initial arrest. The majority of his students, including Takasugi, Gintoki, and Katsura, decided to join the ongoing Joui Wars on the rebels' side to bring back their teacher. It is during their fighting that they met Sakamoto and that he formed a volunteer army called the Kiheitai and was nicknamed ''Kiheitai Leader'', for how he utilizes them in battles. During a battle (but after Sakamoto was taken off the front lines because of an injury), everyone except Katsura, Takasugi, and Gintoki was killed while the said trio were captured. It is then that Katsura and Takasugi were forced to watch as the teacher they joined the war to save was executed, their friend Gintoki being forced to do the deed. Takasugi then lost his eye when going to confront Gintoki. After their enemies left, the trio buried their teacher's head and their comrades' corpses then went their separate ways. Appearance Takasugi has short, black hair with dark-purple highlights, often appearing pure dark purple in some shots. He wears a bandage covering his forehead and left eye and is usually seen wearing a yukata with design dependent on the medium and occasionally a haori jacket to go with. He is usually seen smoking a thin pipe called kiseru (キセル) when gazing from his boat's windows. He has also been seen playing the shamisen and wearing a sedge hat. In the Class 3-Z universe, Takasugi wears the standard school uniform but has unbuttoned it to reveal a crimson red shirt underneath. He wears a more standard, medical eye patch, and he doesn't seem to smoke in this universe. As a samurai in the Joui war, he wore a low-collared black vest under a long coat lined with violet cloth and patterned with gold-colored lines. He wore black pants and boots and a white obi. Like his companions, he also adorned his head with a long strip of white ribbon. Strength & Abilities Master Swordsmanship Specialist: He's an excellent swordsman, being a perfect equal to Gintoki despite the other's own capabilities and skill. Although he usually strays from battling, he can take on armies by himself and can win battles. Takasugi uses a katana, which he always carries with him, a shirasaya, which is a kind of concealed blade that, while lacking the tsuba, or guard, has a casing made of wood and on first glance isn't much different than the kind of sword Gin wields. However, Takasugi's sword has an actual blade.Takasugi is also one of the best swordsmen in Gintama, easily rivaling Gintoki, who's "name once struck fear in the heart of every Amanto." Takasugi could beat hordes of Amanto (alien) soldiers and leave unscathed. During the Joui war, he was feared as one of the Four Heavenly Kings, along with Gintoki, Katsura, and Sakamoto. Takasugi could easily defeat dozens Naraku assassins and fight and defeat Oboro right after. Enhanced Strength: Takasugi is overwhelmingly powerful, a perfect match to Gintoki, who could snap steel cables, smash craters into solid rocks, and pull down a helicopter with one hand and little leverage. When freeing Kamui from his imprisonment at the hands of the Harusame Pirates, Takasugi was easily able to cut through the steel shackles, and against Gintoki, the impact of their blows destroyed the ground they stood on Enhanced Speed: Takasugi is extremely agile and swift, cutting down and dodging arrows and bullets, His speed far surpasses most characters in the series, one such being Okita Sougo, who could cut down Kamui's gunshot with very little effort. During his fight with Gintoki, Takasugi was able to fight at tremendous speeds, delivering countless blows in a matter of seconds. Enhanced Durability: Takasugi has been shown to be very resilient, capable of surviving a number of fatal wounds and major life-threatening injures. During his battle with Gintoki, when that. Shouyou Yoshida (吉田 松陽, Yoshida Shōyō?) was a head of a private school named Shoka Sonjuku and the master of Oboro, Sakata Gintoki, Takasugi Shinsuke, Katsura Kotarou, and Imai Nobume. Shouyou is the last split personality developed by Utsuro, a human who became immortal thanks to the high amount of Altana within his body. For five hundred years, Utsuro became a government assassin, forming a trained assassin group known as Tenshouin Naraku and lead them with his other bloodthirsty personalities. Utsuro's original personality started to resist the way his other selves continued to slaughter and it resulted in the accidental creation of Shouyou, who was able to suppress the other personas, becoming the one in control. During an assassination of a household, Shouyou comes across a dying slave child and heals him using his blood. The child, Oboro, stays with Shouyou in gratitude despite the Naraku leader's warnings that he may end up being trained with the Naraku. Shouyou reveals to him that he has become wary of all the killing and death and wishes to open his own school to teach children, asking Oboro to become his first student. Shouyou is able to defect from the group and Oboro later flees with him. While camping, Shouyou suggests the name Shouka Sonjuku for his new school and again asks that Oboro becomes his first disciple. Later in the night, Oboro finds Naraku assassins near their position and uses himself as bait to draw them away from Shouyou. He also springs a trap, set by the man, that kills Oboro along with some of the assassins, while Shouyou watches on. Devastated, Shouyou escapes and for a while wanders around Japan. He hears rumors of a "corpse-eating demon" within battlefields and encounters a child named Gintoki. Seeing the similarities between himself and Gintoki, Shouyou decides to take him in and train him, giving Gintoki his sword. The two wander around the country until settling down and opening the school near a village where the young Takasugi and Katsura live. They gain many young, mostly poor, students and they also receive both Takasugi and Katsura, who They gain many young, mostly poor, students and they also receive both Takasugi and Katsura, who became disillusioned with their own school discipline and gravitated towards Shouyou's philosophy, trying to find one's own ideals while struggling against themselves. A few years later, the Naraku arrive to arrest him and despite Gintoki's best efforts, Shouyou leaves without resistance and the school is burned down. Before leaving, he asks Gintoki to protect his fellow students for him. Unknown to the students, Shouyou was arrested for defecting from the Naraku, while they believed that it was a wrongful arrest for teaching "dissent" to the students. Unknown to Shouyou, the person who revealed his location was Oboro, who somehow survived thanks to Shouyou's immortal blood and trained with the Naraku to distract them from finding the ex-leader. Oboro happened to walk past Shouyou, Takasugi, Katsura, and Gintoki when they left the school and grew jealous of the happy atmosphere, wanting his teacher back. The students decide to join the ongoing Joui Wars to save their teacher, inadvertently prolonging the war for a while. In jail, Shouyou teaches his jailer, Mukuro, while Oboro looks on in displeasure. During a battle, the surviving students are massacred and Gintoki, Katsura, and Takasugi are captured. The Tendoushuu decide to execute him by first showing him the bodies of his dead students and forcing his "first" disciple, Gintoki, to choose between killing him or killing Takasugi and Katsura. At the same time, Shouyou's original personality breaks free and decides to kill off his other personalities and leaves Shouyou for last, convinced that they will continue to suffer and decides to take matters into his own hands to end everything. Instead of seeing his impending death to Utsuro, he thanks Gintoki for keeping his promise to protect their friends with a smile. And he is killed figuratively and literally by Utsuro and Gintoki respectively. Gintoki, Takasugi and Katsura are left to wallow in despair for their failure along with Shouyou's head. They bury the head and their comrade's bodies and went their separate ways. At the same time, Shouyou's body is burned by the Naraku until they see him revive in front of them, head regrown and body burnt-free. But the body now permanently belongs to the original personality, Utsuro. Legacy Throughout the series, Yoshida Shouyou was shown to have great influences on Gintoki, Katsura and Takasugi. Shouyou is widely seen to be an impactful philosophical preacher, affecting even fierce brutes like Gintoki and Mukuro. His teachings were so important to both Katsura and Takasugi that they still carry the textbooks with them as adults, with the books ironically saving both of them later. While Gintoki claimed to have spilled ramen over the book and threw it away, it is evident that he keeps his respect and gratitude to Shouyou in heart. Moreover, his death had greatly affected his three students. After the Joui War, Takasugi became willing to destroy the world, seeing his teacher's death as a proof of the world being unbearably corrupted. Katsura also shared the desire to destroy the world too, but due to re-meeting Gintoki, realized that there were many people he cherished and wanted to protect; in doing so, he believed that there would be a way to change Edo that would not sacrifice many lives, saying that was what Shouyou would have hoped for if he Appearance Shouyou's appearance is very similar to that of Katsura. He has long light brown-grey hair and green eyes. He also wears a grey robe and a haori. He is often seen with a gentle smile on his face. Personality A kind and gentle man, Shouyou was the kind of man who remained in his students' memories long after he died. Well known for his ways, he always extended his hand to children and possibly adults: Gintoki was outwardly adopted by him and the poor children who attended his school were always welcomed for free. He supplied his own books and even was shown teaching Imai Nobume his lessons despite the fact that they were prisoner and captor. When Takasugi and Katsura started coming to his school, he wasn't fazed at all, even welcoming Takasugi despite his eagerness to defeat everyone there in Kendo and even treated him just like Gintoki. Noticeably, Gintoki was allowed to sleep during lessons and Shouyou didn't ever seem to mind, and when Katsura attempted to defuse a situation by making rice balls for everyone, Shouyou ate several and assisted in calming Takasugi and Gintoki. But like all Gintama characters, Shouyou has a peculiar trait: being capable of knocking people literally into the ground with a single tap on their heads. He always uses this technique when berating or warning his students when they go out of their way to do something for him (like attacking the government officials looking for him, or when Gintoki attempted to save his future friends from bullies), always saying with it "You're a 100 years too early for [current situation]". In all aspects, it was clear to see why Gintoki and Takasugi went the paths they went on after Shouyou's death: Gintoki had lost his father figure and Takasugi lost the only person who could understand him. As he was revealed to be Utsuro's good personality, Shouyou had a strong willpower to control Utsuro's body and suppressed his other personas so he can try his best to redeem himself for a greater good. Strength & Abilities Since Shouyou and Utsuro share the same body, all of Utsuro's abilities Shouyou knows as well. Physical Strength: According to a flashback, Shouyou was shown to have great physical strength. In his first meeting with Katsura and Takasugi, he defeated a gang by a simple knock on their head, and his knock on Gintoki, Katsura and Takasugi's head is enough to plant them in the ground. Master Swordsman: Gintoki, who had never lost a match (no matter his opponent being children or adults)before meeting Shouyou, had never once been able to win a fight against Shouyou. Charisma: Shown to be fun-loving and kind, this behavior was the reason young, poor children joined his school, how Gintoki joined him, how Oboro looked up to him and how Takasugi and Katsura abandoned their prestigious school to join his. OFFICIAL ENGLISH NAME: Kotarou Katsura DATE OF BIRTH: 26 Jun/Cancer AGE: Late twenties TITLES: The Rampaging Noble The Dawn of Jouishishi Master Escapee Kotarou Runaway Kotarou Bomb Demon Pine Tree Kotarou the Coward The general The Angel Of Death The Noble Youth Of Madness ALSO KNOWN AS: Fruits Punch Samurai G Captain Katsuura DJ Ozura Katsurap Kotarou Katsura (桂 小太郎, Katsura Kotarō?) is the leader of a moderate Joui faction and a fugitive wanted by the authorities. He is also proficient in the art of escape from the Shinsengumi (formerly), penitentiaries and explosives. In his childhood, Katsura's parents died due to an illness. He and his grandmother were then stripped of their home, and for some time they wandered the streets, homeless. While visiting the grave of his parents, his grandmother taught him that no matter how strong or great a warrior maybe, if he dies, he wouldn't be able to protect his country or any other people at all. So in order to be a great general, one must be more careful and more fearful in order to survive and lead the war. It is unknown what he was doing after his grandmother died. But he gained a reputation for being clever, which allowed him to receive a scholarship to his village's prestigious military school. He was friends with Takasugi Shinsuke at this time. The duo encounters Yoshida Shouyou, who had opened a free school for mostly poor children, and Sakata Gintoki, a child whom Shouyou was raising. Katsura and Takasugi were already disillusioned with their education, disgusted with their fellow students' pomposity and became attracted to Shouyou's philosophy. They will drop out of the military school and join Shouyou's for the next few years. During the Kansei Purge, Shouyou is arrested and Katsura joins the ongoing Joui War with Takasugi, Gintoki, and the other students to save him. It is during the war that he earned the nicknames Runaway Kotarou, for his strategic retreats, and The Noble Youth of Madness, for his poise when participating in battles. It is also at this time when he met Sakamoto Tatsuma. During a battle (but after Sakamoto was taken off the front lines because of an injury), everyone except Katsura, Takasugi, and Gintoki were killed while said the trio were captured. It is then that Katsura and Takasugi were forced to watch as the teacher they joined the war to save was executed, their friend Gintoki being forced to do the deed. After their enemies left, the trio buried their teacher's head and their comrades' corpses then went their separate ways. For the next ten years, Katsura will continue his Joui activities underground, forming his own faction and learning all he can about what his enemies, the bakufu are doing. This includes learning about the formation of the Shinsengumi Appearance He has long black hair halfway down his back (Okada Nizou wondered whether Katsura is really a man, for having such silky hair in Episode 58) that he either leaves loose or ties. He sports olive-brown eyes and has an attractive demeanor. Neptune Shoukaku in Episode 319 describes him as a dainty guy with effeminate and delicate features. He typically wears a blue kimono with a yellow sash. The fact that he typically wears a pale blue haori on top of his kimono and white socks with slippers suggests that he is particular about how he dresses and carries himself. He is never seen lying around or sitting in a unrefined manner, and he typically keeps his arms in his sleeves when not carrying anything. Since he is a wanted man, Katsura usually uses disguises to hide from Shinsengumi or to wander freely in public. As a child, the bangs framing his face were chin length, with the rest of his hair tied in a high ponytail. He is shown wearing a pale green kimono and a darker green haori, a samurai outfit, and a white kimono(as a child). Personality Katsura's illogical decisions often suggest him to be a complete moron, though this may be a result of his lack of common sense rather than actual stupidity as in his childhood he was considered a talented genius who was able to attend a prestigious school without having the money to pay for it. Despite that, Katsura couldn't identify the Shogun by his physical appearance, or by his nickname "Shou-chan" during the Confessional Arc. It was later revealed that both the Shogun and the Joui rebels knew each other all along. Although he appears like an idiot most of the time in the series, he is very smart and sensible when serious circumstances arise. Katsura is hardly ever seen joking, which only serves to amplify the oddities of his character. He also has an extreme imagination and improvisation, as he sometimes does the voices of some inanimate objects and tends to have long and dramatic flashbacks and reflections out of pointless matters. Katsura is also very persistent and kept pestering Gintoki to join him in his Jouishishi rebellion. He is a charismatic leader and commands great respect from his followers. One of his Joui followers described him as a man who cannot back down once he gets into high spirits over something. In fact, he was able to rally a big group of followers in a very short time during his prison stint in Episode 110. Strength & Abilities Master Swordsmanship Specialist: Katsura is a genius master swordsman. In his childhood, he was under the tutelage of Yoshida Shouyou together with Sakata Gintoki and Takasugi Shinsuke. He learned swordsmanship from Yoshida Shouyou, Katsura uses a Katana and is a highly skilled samurai. Part of the legendary "Joui 4", he earned the nickname "The Nobleman of Madness". This was evident that once he decided to go all out on Shoukakau, he ignores defense and was capable of making offensive skills, even comparable to a rampaging beast. Enhanced strength: Katsura has been shown to be really strong and possesses incredible levels of strength, demonstrated in the Rakuyou Arc when he was able to cut of Shokaku's arm, when he was able to slam the latters own spear into his stomach, And when he was able break the latters spear with just a kick, and when he was able to defeat the Shokaku with a headbutt, despite the latter having a hard head. OFFICIAL ENGLISH NAME: Tatsuma Sakamoto DATE OF BIRTH: November 15 / Scorpio AGE: Late twenties TITLES: The Dragon of Katsurahama Loud Fellow Tatsuma Sakamoto (坂本 辰馬, Sakamoto Tatsuma?) is the leader of the trading fleet Kaientai. Despite being labeled a "natural idiot"[1] by everyone around him, Sakamoto was one of the samurai that fought alongside Gintoki in the Joui War. Background Early years Nothing is much known about Sakamoto's childhood, except that he was born to a family of wealthy merchants in Tosa Province. Later on, despite being a pacifist, he decided to join in the Joui War in its last years, acting as a supplier for the samurai. In his first meeting with Sakata Gintoki, Takasugi Shinsuke and Katsura Kotarou, he vomited at the first two in the face due to being seasick. During the war, seeing his comrades die one by one, Sakamoto decided to leave the Earth, fulfill his dream of travelling through the galaxy and find a way that would benefit both humans and the Amanto. His dream was encouraged by Gintoki, even though the latter refused to go with him.[2] At some point before he left, his right arm was gravely injured on the battlefield in an attempt to carry an injured enemy to safety, giving him permanent damage and making him unable to use a sword. He was taken off the front lines due to his injury, and by the time he had recovered, he discovered that Gintoki, Takasugi, and Katsura had disappeared. He spent some time searching for the three of them, but the only one he found was Gintoki. Shortly after reconnecting with Gintoki, Sakamoto left to pursue his dream of going to space. Some time after his break from the Joui movement, Sakamoto was assumed to be raising funds, only to be tricked and thrown to the ocean. He ended up being picked up by the Chidori's Division 2, whose vice-captain was Mutsu. In spite of being a slave for them, he offered to buy the whole pirate fleet from her, yet she flatly turned down his offer. During his imprisonment, Sakamoto tried to do business with other slaves, which Mutsu gradually took interest in. Later, upon learning of the Chidori supervisor's plan to kill her and the slaves, she instructed him to free the slaves and escaped, whereas she chose to surrender herself. Nevertheless, Sakamoto let the slaves take over the fleet and defeated the pirates to save her. The pirates were then thrown to the ocean. Afterwards, the fleet became Kaientai, with he and Mutsu being the leader and second-in-command, respectively. Running Kaientai During their years of running Kaientai, the company made a business transaction with Dark Vader. Though, during the negotiation, Sakamoto did nothing but vomit. While Mutsu was out, he misunderstood Dark Vader's placards and eventually agreed with his offer, not knowing that the Amanto's true intention was to take over the Earth. When the negotiation had ended, although Mutsu pointed out his mistakes, Sakamoto ignored her, still believing that the Renho Tribe wanted to protect the Earth. It is presumed that he gave Elizabeth to Katsura at this time, as a gift from the business. At one point in the present, Sakamoto went on a space-travelling trip from Earth. While waiting for the ship, he was bitten in the head by Sadaharu, but he ignored the staff's warning and left with the dog on his head. When the ship was attacked by Joui extremists, Sakamoto inadvertently defeated a shooter threatening the Yorozuya. However, he was kicked by Kagura, who accused him of stealing Sadaharu. Appearance He has a brown natural perm (similar to Sakata Gintoki) and wears a dark red coat, tabi-less geta, and round-rim sunglasses. His eyes, when not hidden, are blue. He has a scar on his right hand that starts at his palm and goes halfway up his lower arm. His weapon of choice used to Personality His overly optimistic attitude sometimes leads him into all sorts of trouble, as he tends to brush off or even flat-out ignore bad incidents and situations. He has a habit of laughing at most times, even at inappropriate times. One of Sakamoto's main traits is his empty-headed thinking. He can be very spacey, and he often doesn't notice important details, like with his unawareness that Mutsu is from the Yato tribe despite spending years together and misinterpreting Dark Vader's plans to conquer Earth. Despite all this, deep down Sakamoto is really rather smart. He shows an excellent ability in giving inspirational speeches and is also a brilliant negotiator when he needs to be, convincing the entire Renho race to turn on their leader. Because of this, it's a possibility that his lighthearted personality is a ruse, as he has a tendency to start things and then seem to not to know what he did. He cherishes his friends and subordinates; he was enraged when the Chidori supposedly hurt Mutsu, and he stood up for Katsura back in the war when other soldiers were ragging on him for being a coward. However, he feels insecure around his friends, as he states that if they knew his deeper feelings for them, they wouldn't like him anymore. His business tactics, such as the 50 million yen bags, can be sketchy at times, earning him the nickname "con man." However, at heart, he wants to run a business that makes people smile. More literally, his ultimate goal is peace through mutual profit – a reflection of his pacifist nature. Despite being a pacifist, he doesn't mind a good fight on occasion. He will often aim to maim or disarm before he aims to kill. He also has a tendency to start fights and egg people on, like when he teased Gintoki about his feud with Takasugi during the war. Strength & Abilites Swordsmanship: During the Joui War, Sakamoto was shown to have great skills in using sword, having fought along with Sakata Gintoki, Katsura Kotarou and Takasugi Shinsuke and survived until he left the Joui samurai lines. He is unable to wield a sword now due to an injury to his right hand. Shooting: Although he was a good swordsman in the Joui War, Sakamoto uses a pistol as his weapon after leaving the war, most likely due to the injury he sustained. Leadership: He has displayed great qualities of a leader. In dangerous situations, he is willing to sacrifice himself to save other people,[4] and he never abandoned his crew even when it seemed like they all abandoned him. His leaderships skills even convinced Tokugawa Nobu Nobu to right himself as a person. Trading/Negotiating: It can be assumed that this is his main strength. According to Gintoki, in the Joui War, Sakamoto had supported the samurai's side by supplying weapons, raising capital and gathering money. At present, he was even able to convince the whole Renho Tribe to ally with him and fight against Dark Vader.[5] Reading: Sakamoto is said to have superior reading skills.[6]
