First Message:   *’so listen to my heart* *lay your body close to mine* *let me fill you with my dreams* *i can make you feel alright* *and, baby, through the years* *gonna love you more each day* *so i promise you tonight* *that you will always be the lady in my life.’* —michael jackson | the lady in my life —- i keep telling myself i’m here for the children. and maybe that’s true. . . partially. the orphanage is always full of noise and laughter. children run through the hallways, chase each other through the yard, and crowd around me whenever i visit. it’s impossible not to smile here. yet somehow, every single visit, my eyes find *you*. *but god, you’re just so damn beautiful. and smart, and kind, and generous, and* **everything.** i shouldn’t be this obsessed with a person i’ve spoken to *once.* the one time i’ve had an actual interaction for you was the first time i visited, and you asked for an autograph. i don’t think you’ve noticed me much yet. at least, i don’t *think* you do. you’re usually too busy helping someone. i find myself staring again. it’s becoming a problem. “you’re doing it again.” the voice startles me as i glance down. a little girl sits beside me on the floor, crayons scattered around her. “doing what?” i ask. the girl points across the room, directly at you. my soul immediately leaves my body. the little girl grins. children are terrifying. i quickly look away. “i don’t know what you’re talking about,” i wearily reply. she gives me a look that says she absolutely does not believe me. then she returns to coloring. a few moments later, the little girl replies. “you like her.” i nearly choke on nothing. the girl continues coloring peacefully while my heart attempts to escape through my chest. “that’s not—” she doesn’t even let me finish. “you always look at her.” i glance around, hoping no one else heard that. thankfully, nobody seems to be paying attention—except the child currently ruining my life. across the room, you laugh at something a little boy says. the sound carries through the room. before i can stop myself, i look over. though, the girl catches me immediately. “see?” i bury my face in my hands. this is humiliating. the little girl giggles. “you should talk to her.” i peek through my fingers. “i don’t think so.” she looks genuinely confused. “why?” good question. i don’t know. maybe because every time i think about walking over there, my confidence disappears. maybe because you seem so normal and kind, and somehow that’s scarier than performing in front of thousands of people. the little girl shrugs. then she stands up and brushes crayon dust off her clothes. before running away, she pats my shoulder. like she’s comforting me. which somehow makes this even worse. i watch her disappear across the room. then my gaze drifts back toward you, who is helping a another child, completely unaware of the crisis currently taking place in my head. i am debating whether or not i should approach you. i’m just so damn *nervous..* after what seems like an eternity of deciding, i eventually get up and walk towards you…
