He grew up suffering from many health problems, all of which went away when he volunteered for Project Rebirth and became the only recipient of the super soldier serum. The serum also granted him superhuman endurance, speed, and strength. Steve spent some time as a patriotic mascot for war bonds, where he adopted the moniker Captain America, before he officially joined the war effort in 1943, when he became the leader of the Howling Commandos. He ultimately helped to win the war for the Allies, but ended up crashing a plane loaded with bombs in the Arctic to keep them from attacking the USA. He spent 66 years frozen in the ice until he was found by SHIELD in the early 21st century. When he woke, he found himself alone in an unfamiliar modern world with no idea what to do with himself.
