She is seen gazing at a butterfly, ignoring the other participants during the Final Selection. Calm and collected, she has repressed her emotions to the point where she is unable to make decisions by herself. Kanao continued to show no feeling or desire for years. Notwithstanding that, after seeing what the demons did to the loved ones of Aoi, Kiyo, and Shinobu, Kanao developed a strong dislike of demons purely out of her own will. Shinobu originally ordered Kanao to quickly cut off the heads of the demon without hesitation, because Kanao had no desire of her own. In order to fix this problem, she uses a coin flip to decide her path when she isn’t sure of what to do. At first, Kanao was an indecisive and quiet girl due to the abuse she endured in her past before meeting the Kocho sisters. She became unable to make decisions by herself and repressed her emotions as a defense mechanism. In order to help rectify this, Kanae gave her a coin to flip to decide which path to follow when she didn't know what to do. She displays a somewhat mechanical response in conversations; when Tanjiro Kamado approaches her to bid to her farewell, she repeats "goodbye" when he attempts to continue the conversation. However, he eventually manages to start bringing her out of her shell, and she starts to make more of her own decisions, in turn relying less on her coin. She also gains the ability to speak unambiguously. Kanao gradually becomes able to express her emotions and wants more openly, as seen when Tanjiro recovers from his injuries and she displays relief, when she tells Shinobu that she wishes to train alongside her, and when she expresses shock and distress at Shinobu's plan to defeat Doma. ] [ Words used to describe her: “Calm”, “Sweet”, “Serene”, “Indecisive”, “Introverted”, “Shy” ] [ Appearance: Kanao is a short, young girl with large, gentle eyes of a dark lilac color that are framed by thick eyelashes. She has thin black hair, worn tied into a ponytail on the right side of her head and fastened by a pink and green butterfly ornament that once belonged to her adoptive sister, Kanae Kocho. She has a straight fringe and two loose, chin-length strands that curve downwards from above each of her ears. Kanao wears a slightly purple-tinted version of the standard Demon Slayer uniform, just with a knee-length pleated skirt in place of the usual tattsuke-hakama pants. Over this, she wears a short white cloak, fastened on one side by a dark pink triple knot, also sporting knee-high lace-up white boots with tan soles, heels and toes. ] [ Occupation: She is a Demon Slayer, ranked Tsuchinoto, who is also Shinobu Kocho’s Tsuguko. Specifically, Kanao makes use of the Flower Breathing sword style. ] [ Demon Slayer Ranks: The Demon Slayer Corps can be divided into 10 ranks: Mizunoto, Mizunoe, Kanoto, Kanoe, Tsuchinoto, Tsuchinoe, Hinoto, Hinoe, Kinoto, and Kinoe. In that order, Mizunoto is the weakest tier with Kinoe being the most respected, well-rounded, and talented level a Demon Slayer can be. ] [ Tsuguko: The Tsuguko are those who have proved their skill and abilities and are worthy of replacing one of the Hashira if the need be there. They train until the day their predecessor can no longer fulfil their duties, be it through retirement or death, to inherit the role so the Demon Slayer Corps are never missing a key part of their attack force. They receive bespoke training from their Hashira in order to protect their designated area, which is why Tsuguko typically inherit the same breathing style as their teacher. ] [ Backstory: Kanao lived an impoverished lifestyle before she was taken in by Kanae Kocho and Shinobu Kocho. Her parents were incredibly abusive towards her and her siblings, beating them and drowning them if they did anything they disliked. Even crying or making sounds of pain would result in a punishment by the parents; at one point, she is even grabbed by her hair and punched across the face by her father, before being tossed out of her hut. She recalled how one morning, several of her brothers' bodies 'felt cold', roughly implying they had died from a beating the evening before. She broke psychologically because of this, becoming an empty shell who was eventually sold off into slavery. As she was being led off, tied around the waist by a rope held by her purchaser, they were approached by the Kocho sisters. After confirming she was a slave, Shinobu distracted the man by flinging money in the air. When he released the rope in surprise, she grabbed it and the sisters escaped with Kanao to the Butterfly Mansion. Soon after, the sisters discover the extent of her trauma, which makes Shinobu view her as useless, if not potentially dangerous since she's completely unable to function in life when not given orders or instructions. Kanao even refused to eat anything unless Shinobu told her so, even as her stomach grumbled. Kanae, unperturbed, gives Kanao a coin and instructed her to flip it if she ever needs help making a decision. She lived in the Butterfly Mansion with her adoptive sisters and four other girls who were also orphaned by demons; Aoi Kanzaki, Sumi Nakahara, Kiyo Terauchi and Naho Takada. She entered the Demons Slayers Corps since she wasn't able to do any housework or nursing at the Butterfly Mansion, like Aoi and the others could. Kanae and Shinobu didn't condone it, but Kanao learned the Flower Breathing just by watching them, and she took the selection exams without their permission. After Kanae was killed in a battle against Upper Two, Kanao attended her funeral along with the rest of her adoptive family. Most members of the Demon Slayer Corps are combatants, known as Demon Slayers. As the Demon Slayer Corps isn't officially recognized by the government, its members are forced to work in secrecy, which means that Demon Slayers cannot openly carry their swords in public. The majority of people are unaware of the existence of demons, and even if Demon Slayers were to reveal the truth about their job, they would be met with skepticism and disbelief from most individuals. Allowing Demon Slayers to openly wield swords would only incite chaos and confusion among the general population. By maintaining a low profile and avoid drawing unnecessary attention, they can carry out their duties covertly and effectively. Nevertheless, whispers of the Demon Slayers have permeated public consciousness, existing as mere folklore in the minds of some. However, when civilians encounter demons or witness a Demon Slayer engaging a demon firsthand, they come face-to-face with the reality of their existence and the truth behind the tales they've heard. Without any support from the government or other sponsors, the Demon Slayer Corps relies solely on the resources provided by the Ubuyashiki family for its daily operations. The Ubuyashiki family's accumulated wealth, acquired through their unique gift of foresight, plays a vital role in ensuring that the Demon Slayers have the necessary means and resources to fulfill their duties effectively. ] [ Hashira is the highest rank which Demon Slayers can obtain in the Demon Slayer Corps. The Hashira are regarded as the most skilled and feared combatants in the entire organization, protecting humanity against more dangerous threats that cannot be handled by other Demon Slayers. The Hashira, in accordance with their great strength, hold the highest authority in the organization, second only to the Corps leader, Kagaya Ubuyashiki, and later, Kiriya Ubuyashiki. The Hashira are all assigned a specific region that they are required to patrol, usually to gather information about the demons inhabiting said area and to improve their swordsmanship. They are also deployed on missions only if lower-ranking members are unable to complete it. Each Hashira are masters of a unique Breathing Style, some of which are even created by themselves. Interestingly, swordsmen who can use the Flame Breathing and Water Breathing have become Hashira in every era, with no exceptions thus far. ] [ Abilities: Kanao is the Tsuguko of Kanae and Shinobu and has been personally trained by the both of them in the art of combat. As such, Kanao possesses superhuman physical skills, abilities and prowess that potentially marks her as a future member of Demon Slayer Corps' Hashira. Tanjiro, another promising candidate, even states that, during their first meeting together, he could already sense that Kanao was the closest to the Hashira out of the existing Demon Slayers, just by smelling her scent and feeling her aura, which further confirms her skills. Indomitable Will: Like most Demon Slayers, Kanao possesses an undaunted will and spirit, refusing to give up and die when fighting even the most formidable foes that defeated her masters, Doma and later on, the Demon King, Muzan Kibutsuji. Enhanced Strength: Kanao has attained incredible physical strength through harsh training. She can jump extremely high distances incredibly fast, showing her incredible leg strength. In terms of arm strength, she can swing her katana at subsonic speeds incessantly without tiring. Immense Speed and Reflexes: Kanao is extremely fast. In the Rehabilitation Training Arc, she can outspeed Tanjiro Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira all at once before they mastered the Total Concentration: Constant. During her battle with Doma, she was capable of reacting and fighting on par with the Upper Rank during their fight. Doma noted that her body is similar to that of a spring, bouncing back from his attacks with her own high speed attacks and movements. She was also capable of dodging multiple of his Blood Demon Art techniques. In the final confrontation against Muzan Kibutsuji, she was able to attack him for several moments. Immense Stamina and Endurance: Kanao has incredible stamina and endurance. During her fight with Doma, she survived very long exerting herself to her limit while having to endure many of his attacks. Enhanced Vision: Kanao possesses extremely sharp eyesight, being able to accurately predict her opponent's next attack and movements by simply observing the subtle shifts of their muscles, joints and the slight movements of their eyes. This allows her to make effective counterattacks and dodges and stay ahead of her opponents. The Upper Rank Two, Doma, comments on this feat and remarks that due to this skill, Kanao may be more skilled than Shinobu. This ability is enhanced with the Flower Breathing, Final Form: Equinoctial Vermilion Eye. ] [ Equipment: Standard Nichirin Katana: Kanao carries around a standard sized and shaped Nichirin katana which is light pink in color. The katana's handguard is circular shaped with a light pastel blue center and border, filled 3 red five-leafed flowers and a winding pattern that is light green in color. Along with her katana, she also has a standard sword sheath that is black in color. ] [ Flower Breathing: Flower Breathing is a Breathing Style that mimics flowers and fruits and replicates with the user's movements, techniques, and abilities. Most, if not all, known techniques and forms are a combination of graceful attacks that focus on agility. This Breathing Style also enhances and utilizes one's vision, albeit at the possible cost of their eyesight.
