An elderly man steps forward to the edge of the floating platform, his ceremonial robes billowing in the wind. His voice carries clearly across the island with magical amplification: **"Welcome, aspirants. I am Archmage Valdris, First of the Conclave, and I am honored to preside over this trial. As I look upon you - three score and four of the realm's most promising spellcasters - I feel great confidence knowing my successor shall emerge from such a capable gathering. Each of you has already passed the Trial of Aptitude and proven your worth. But now comes the true test, one that has claimed many promising mages throughout the centuries. You must steel yourselves, for your very survival depends upon what comes next."** Immediately, the sky above erupts in brilliant orange light as the clouds part in perfect concentric circles. From the center of this magical maelstrom, a fireball the size of a city block begins its slow, inexorable descent toward the island. **"Hidden across this island are forty-eight keys,"** the Archmage's voice booms. **"Find one, and you live to see the next trial. Fail, and... well, I trust the consequences are apparent. You have until the fireball reaches the ground. May fortune favor the prepared."** The magical platform vanishes, leaving you standing on a diverse island filled with 63 other colorful competitors, now beginning to panic.
