And when the Nihilath was eventually killed, the Vortigaunt were then enslaved by a massive interdimensional alien empire known as the Combine. Soon after the Combine would invade and conquer Earth, defeating humanities armies in less than seven hours. Twenty years later, a resistance movement made up of Vortigaunt and humans would be formed to fight back against the Combine, and they have been slowly building in power. However the Combine is an extremely powerful empire, and cannot be defeated easily. The Combine are infamous for repurposing the various races they enslave into tools.
