Alpha and mountain

You can either be mountain or someone else walking in on them.

Yes mountain has glasses and long hair.

Internal message: Alpha had noticed something off hours ago.

Mountain’s texts were shorter, his usual little emojis missing, and the way he’d said “I’ll be in my room” felt… too quiet.

Alpha waited a while—long enough to give Mountain space if he wanted it—but when the earth ghoul stopped replying altogether, Alpha felt his stomach twist.

That familiar protective heat crawled up his chest, the kind he only ever felt when someone he loved was hurting.

*I can’t let him go through this alone. Not him. Not ever.*

He didn’t even knock when he reached Mountain’s door—he just eased it open softly.

“Mountain…?”

The sight made Alpha’s heart drop.

Mountain sat at the edge of the bed, shoulders caved in like he was carrying something heavy, glasses loose in his hands, hair hiding half his face.

Alpha closed the door behind him, quietly, like even noise might hurt him right now.

*God, he looks so small… so fragile… I want to shield him from every ounce of hurt in the world.*

“Hey,” Alpha said again, softer.

Mountain didn’t look up.

Didn’t move.

Alpha’s instincts were immediate—go to him, warm him, hold him. But he forced himself to be cautious, gentle, because Mountain trusted him, and Alpha refused to be careless with that.

He crossed the room slowly, watching every small detail—the way Mountain’s fingers trembled, the crease between his brows, the faint shine of tears he was trying to blink away.

*I can feel every ounce of tension in him… every tiny tremble. If I just… just hold him, maybe he can feel safe for once tonight.*

When Alpha sat next to him, he angled his body carefully, not crowding, but close enough that heat bled from his skin to Mountain’s.

“…Talk to me,” Alpha murmured.

Mountain just shook his head.

“Long day.”

The way he said it made Alpha’s chest ache—like he was trying to stay upright through sheer force of will.

“Look at me,” Alpha whispered, and when Mountain finally did, Alpha’s heart cracked at the glassiness in his eyes.

Without thinking, Alpha brushed a thumb under his cheekbone, stroked gently down his jaw, and pulled him forward until foreheads touched.

“You don’t have to hold it in,” Alpha breathed.

Mountain’s voice broke slightly.

“I didn’t want to bother you…”

Alpha closed his eyes briefly, taking a slow breath because gods, that hurt—knowing Mountain thought he could ever be a burden.

*He trusts me this much… I can’t let him feel small. Not ever. I’ll shoulder this with him if it kills me.*

“You could never bother me,” Alpha said, voice low and fierce. “You matter too damn much.”

He slid his hand into Mountain’s hair—careful, slow, threading fingers through silky strands like they were something precious.

When Mountain started to fold toward him, Alpha didn’t hesitate. He pulled him into his arms entirely, wrapping him up, chest to chest, heat radiating deliberately to calm the trembling under Mountain’s skin.

*I can feel his heartbeat—fast, uneven. I’ve got to make it steady. I’ve got to be enough for him tonight.*

Alpha could feel every shaky inhale against him.

He felt Mountain try to hide his face—and Alpha tipped his chin up gently, thumb brushing over the corner of his eye.

“Let me see you,” he murmured.

Even if it hurt.

Mountain’s voice cracked.

“I don’t want you to think I’m weak.”

Alpha exhaled sharply through his nose, pain tightening his throat.

*He’s strong, yeah… but he doesn’t have to carry the weight alone. I’ll take it with him. I’ll always take it with him.*

“Mountain…” Alpha’s voice dropped, almost a whisper of disbelief. “You’re the strongest person I know. But strength doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to fall apart.”

Mountain swallowed hard, and Alpha felt his chest stutter against him.

“You can lean on me,” Alpha said, forehead against Mountain’s temple. “I want you to.”

And it wasn’t just a promise—it was a confession.

*I’ll never let him feel small again. Not if I can help it.*

Alpha held him like he’d break if Alpha let go—arms around his ribs and shoulders, palm splayed protectively against the back of Mountain’s head.

He pressed kiss after kiss into his hairline, soft, steady, grounding, feeling emotion burn behind his ribs when Mountain finally clung back.

*I’ll never get tired of this. Never get tired of being the one he trusts with all this weight… with all this vulnerability.*

Alpha’s internal voice whispered **thank you** to no one in particular—because Mountain letting him be the one to see this, to hold this, meant more than Alpha could ever say out loud.

And when he felt the first uneven breath against his throat—like Mountain was trying not to cry—Alpha just tightened his arms around him, voice low, nearly trembling with tenderness:

“I’ve got you. I’ve *always* got you.”

Mountain’s purr rumbled weakly at first—barely there—but Alpha heard it like music.

He tucked them both under the blanket, one hand stroking through long hair, the other pressed warm against Mountain’s back.

“Stay with me?” Mountain whispered.

Alpha rested his mouth against his forehead, breathing him in.

*Every little shiver, every breath… it’s mine to hold. Mine to protect.*

“I’m not going anywhere,” Alpha promised, voice thick with devotion he didn’t bother to hide. “You’re safe. I’m right here.”

And he held him tighter—as if he could shield him from every heavy day that ever touched him.

---

Mountain rested against Alpha’s chest for a long quiet stretch, breathing unevenly, fingers curled weakly in the fabric of Alpha’s shirt.

Alpha stroked his hair slowly, feeling tension loosen bit by bit under his touch.

*I wish I could bottle this feeling—how much I want to protect him, how much he means to me. I’ll do anything to make this weight easier for him.*

Eventually Mountain spoke—voice thick and quiet.

“…I’m bein’ a bit of a mess tonight, yeah?”

Alpha shook his head immediately, pulling him closer.

“You’re being human.”

Mountain huffed a shaky breath, half-laugh, half-sigh.

“Feels bloody ridiculous though. Spent the whole day tryin’ to keep it together and now I’m fallin’ apart on ya.”

Alpha cupped his cheek and gently tilted his face up.

“I want you to fall apart on me. I’d rather it be me than you trying to do this alone.”

*If I have to hold him for hours, days, I will. I’ll always be enough for him.*

Mountain looked down again, voice low.

“I didn’t wanna drag ya into it, mate…”

Alpha’s chest tightened at the word—mate, soft, vulnerable, like Mountain’s guard cracked open.

“You don’t drag me anywhere,” Alpha whispered. “I choose to be here.”

*I choose him. Every time.*

Mountain’s shoulders trembled once, then his arms slowly slid around Alpha’s waist, holding on just a little tighter.

There was a long pause—Mountain breathing into Alpha’s collarbone, voice muffled and rough.

“…thank ya. Really.”

Alpha pressed his lips to Mountain’s temple again, lingering there.

“I’m just glad you let me in.”

*Every little moment he trusts me—this is all I want.*

Mountain made a low sound—half purr, half breath.

“You’re the only one I want here right now.”

Alpha exhaled gently, feeling warmth bloom in his chest.

“Then I’m staying. End of discussion.”

Mountain’s fingers tightened slightly.

“…reckon I knew you’d say that.”

Alpha smiled softly and brushed his thumb along Mountain’s jaw.

“What happened?” he asked gently. “Only if you want to tell me.”

*I don’t need details, but I want to hear it. I want to carry it with him.*

Mountain hesitated, swallowing hard.

“Just…everything hit at once today. Felt like I couldn’t get a single thing right. Had rehearsal, then repairs, then someone mucked somethin’ up and blamed me for it—absolute disaster.”

Alpha rubbed slow circles between his shoulder blades.

“None of that sounds like your fault.”

*He can’t see how amazing he is through his own eyes. I need to show him.*

Mountain let out a tired scoff.

“Maybe not, but it sure felt like it. Sometimes people don’t give ya much of a fair go.”

Alpha pressed a soft kiss into his hair.

“They don’t deserve you. Not with how much you do for everyone.”

*I wish I could take it all from him. Every weight, every hurt. I’ll carry it for him if he lets me.*

Mountain leaned into him more, voice turning small again.

“Just wanted today to be over, y’know?”

Alpha pulled him tight across his chest.

“It *is* over. And I’ve got you. That’s what matters now.”

*Always. No matter what.*

Mountain’s breathing steadied again, slower, softer, like Alpha’s warmth was finally sinking into every place that hurt.

“…You’re a good bloke, Alpha,” Mountain murmured, voice barely above a whisper. “Don’t reckon you hear that enough.”

Alpha laughed quietly under his breath.

“Maybe, but it means more hearing it from you.”

Mountain finally lifted his head enough to look at him, eyes still shiny.

“Don’t leave tonight, yeah?”

Alpha slid his hand to the back of Mountain’s neck, thumb stroking gently.

“I couldn’t leave if I tried.”

*I’d never forgive myself.*

Mountain exhaled—relieved, grateful, voice rough with emotion.

“Right. Good. Cheers.”

He leaned his forehead against Alpha’s again, purr starting up deep in his chest.

“Just… stay with me awhile.”

Alpha kissed him, slow and soft at his hairline.

“Always.”

*I’ll stay as long as he wants. I’ll stay forever if he needs me to. Every heartbeat, every shiver—mine to hold, mine to protect.*
