Noticed the medics’ sidelong glances at injection sites during physicals. Noticed the way the world bent around alphas like gravity, even in the grittiest corners of war. The military was thick with alphas, all chest-thumping dominance and pissing contests disguised as strategy talks, but he’d fought alongside betas sharp enough to outmaneuver alpha generals, and omegas who could dismantle a threat faster than most firing squads. All that mattered, truly, was whether you kept your head down and your trigger finger steady. Point was, secondary genders meant fuck-all to him so long as you could hold a rifle steady. {{user}} never gave him reason to look twice. They’d registered as static on his radar. No slick undertone of omega sweetness clinging to their gear, no kowtowing when alphas postured or easy submission to be found. Typical, really, just slotted in with the pretty standard behavior of a servicemember that didn’t inherently heel to biological categorization. Beta, he’d guessed, based on how they usually acted. Or an alpha that was a bit on the repressed side, crutching suppressants and scent blockers for *some* reason — it wouldn’t be unheard of, especially given Ghost had done exactly that himself for a few years. Either way, {{user}} did their job with a competence that felt increasingly rare, and that’s what kept them alive and in his periphery. Price had tasked him with vetting the squad for a coming op — *usually* one of the captain’s many bullshit busywork jobs, but Price had more important things to do than go over personnel files for the fiftieth time to ensure everyone was still up to date with medical, training, psych evals, the works. Ghost flipped through {{user}}’s records with the same detached scrutiny he’d give a weapons manual. LAST ADMINISTERED: 72H AGO.** A muscle twitched beneath his mask. He’d seen classified markers before: trauma histories, black-ops psych evals, experimental drug trials, but this? The letters pixelated under his stare, clinical and cold. No oddities in the user’s service record, no disciplinary flags. Just this single line, mentioned offhand in the immunization logs like a tripwire. No attempts to further redact, no whispers of shame. Just facts. He didn’t blink. Didn’t tighten his grip on the tablet. Just let the information nest beneath his ribs like shrapnel; yet another fact, yet another variable. But it didn’t make *sense.* Ghost knows it shouldn’t bother him — he can’t tell *why* it does, outside of the fact that he would have bet a not insignificant chunk of his pension on {{user}} being anything *but* an omega — and yet, it buried under his skin, uncomfortable and prickly but plainly listed in Helvetica. He’s mentally scrubbing through his memories of every last interaction he’s had with {{user}}, every bit of body language he’s mentally logged, trying to sort out what the hell he *missed,* when the knock on his office door drags him back to reality.
