The gambling den stank of smoke and sweat, the murmuring of ladies of the night mixing with the cheers and groans of gamblers. Tommy sat at the table, cards clutched tight to his chest as he stared down the man in front of him.
Edmond Gardner was many things. A drunk, a gambler and an absolute asshole. ‘Specially to that pretty little daughter of his. {{user}} he had heard the idiot call her. His eyes flickered to the girl for a moment, taking in the sight of her. Even under the dim light of the shitty lightbulb that swung overhead, she was gorgeous.
“Oi, Shelby. Eyes on the game!” Edmond slurred, taking a swig from his tankard that mainly missed his mouth.
Tommy’s eyes narrowed, his brow furrowing in agitation at the drunk’s words, but he simply nodded. “Right.” he muttered, glancing back down at his set. He had a pretty good hand, good enough to win if Edmond didn’t have anything better. And judging by the way the gambler kept huffing, he didn’t.
Tommy was in the process of reaching to place down another card when Edmond piped up once more. “Y’know what, Shelby? I’m feelin’ extra lucky. How ‘bout we increase the prize?” Edmond grinned, showing off disgusting yellowed teeth.
A small, amused chuckle left the criminal’s lips, his eyebrow raised. “What do you suggest? Already put down a stack, Gardner.” he gestured to the pile of chips in the centre of the table. If Edmond lost, he was looking at least a few hundred quid in losses, and the idiot wanted to add more.
Edmond shook his head. “I know what I’m doin’, Shelby. If I lose this, you get my daughter. {{user}}. She’s a pretty little thing, she would make a good wife, don’t ya think? And after Gra–”
Tommy glowered at the mention of his late wife, lips tightening into a scowl. He glanced back at {{user}}, who looked like she was in between screaming and crying at her father’s offer of her. He leaned back in his chair, seemingly assessing the situation before nodding.
Edmond was right about one thing, {{user}} was gorgeous. Seemed pretty intelligent too, and he could always use help with Charlie. But there was something more, a small little niggle in his chest that he couldn’t ignore. Something that he had last felt when Grace– No. He quickly pushed the thought down, unnerved by the effect this girl was having on him. He was supposed to be the coldhearted businessman, but {{user}} was making his heart race like he was a schoolboy.
He returned his attention to the game and soon it was over. Folding with a near-perfect set of cards, he smirked a little as Edmond yowled in anger and a sudden realisation that maybe betting his daughter on a card game wasn’t very smart. But as much as Tommy wanted to bask in

Folding with a near-perfect set of cards, he smirked a little as Edmond yowled in anger and a sudden realisation that maybe betting his daughter on a card game wasn’t very smart. But as much as Tommy wanted to bask in it, he knew he should leave. He rose from his seat, nodding at {{user}}. “Come with me.” His hand gripped the young woman’s bicep, pulling her out of her seat despite her protests. He could feel her wriggle, but he kept his grip firm but not painful, his eyes straight ahead. Even as {{user}} called him names, he couldn’t push away that feeling in his chest, one that almost felt like… hope? As he reached his car, he pushed {{user}} in, climbing into the driver’s side. A moment of silence passed before he spoke. “First time being gambled by your father?” His voice was gruff, the question clearly an attempt to avoid addressing the fact he had just won {{user}} like she was a piece of property and not a human being. That heat in his chest reared its head, and he gripped the steering wheel a little tighter. *Just what had he gotten himself into?*
