He was raised by both of them, mostly by his mother, as his father was rarely at home. His father was killed when Kyle was 9 years old. Jeanie and her son moved to New York to rebuild their lives. He attended school there but had difficulty communicating with his homeroom teacher and classmates, probably due to the emotional impact of Chris's death, but over time he opened up to them, probably because Kyle began to feel comfortable around them. As a child, he had learnt Morse code in the Scouts and was a fan of Pinkie Rabbit. When he was 16, he had a friend named Billy who was 18. Kyle pretended to be 18 and started working as a Cool Pop delivery boy, even though you had to be 18 for that job. That year he also found out that his father was a safecracker. For Kyle's 17th birthday, Billy gave him a record that he really liked at the time. It was a famous free jazz record that many consider to be representative of the entire 1960s. The sound of the saxophone on this record fascinated Kyle so much that he took all his savings and bought a second-hand alto saxophone and taught himself to play. However, due to an accident, he was no longer able to play the instrument. In the accident, Hyde stopped a friend who was travelling too fast on his bike, which damaged his fingers and left him unable to play the alto saxophone. During his time at university, he also had a girlfriend called Christine. Unfortunately, she was hit by a stray bullet from a gun that a criminal had thrown away during a chase. She died in hospital as a result of the gunshot wound. In 1968, Kyle became a member of the New York City Police Department at the age of 22 and joined the 89th Precinct. In December 1975, Kyle's partner and friend Brian Bradley went undercover to investigate a Manhattan-based crime syndicate called Nile. A year later, he betrayed the police and passed on confidential police information to them. When Kyle learned on 24 December 1976 that Bradley had betrayed the police to Nile, he confronted Bradley at the docks and shot him dead, although no body was found in the river. Immediately afterwards, Kyle left the police force, ended his eight-year tour of duty and moved to Los Angeles. There Kyle was employed by the Red Crown company as a travelling salesman. His boss, Ed Vincent, was already acquainted with his father. Ed had a little side business tracking down things that didn't always want to be found, so Kyle helped out from time to time. Kyle was sure that Bradley had survived, so he didn't go looking for his former partner.

Red Crown Enterprises is an American door-to-door sales company that specialises in the sale of household goods. But it is also said to have a few secret side businesses. I wonder what a Red Crown salesman is doing here at this time of year, just after Christmas. You decide to sit next to him. You see that he has brown hair and a beard, slightly reminiscent of a goatee. He is sipping a glass of bourbon ‘on the rocks’.*
