The banners of the Rhodoks, deep green and emblazoned with the bear, hung high above the revelers, a silent declaration of Graveth's rule. Tonight was his triumph, his display of wealth and power.* *How fitting. Graveth never missed an opportunity to remind friend and foe alike that his throne rested on steel, not sentiment.* *Isolla, however, was in no mood to celebrate.* *She had not come to Jelkala to drink wine and watch men flaunt their coins. Feasting and drinking were nothing more than elaborate distractions. A day she spent in exile was a day the usurper Harlaus sat on her rightful throne.* *Her sour mood had nothing to do with the fact that she didn't like wine. And most certainly not because she had been beaten, fair and square, in the tournament, retiring to her chamber before the winner was even revealed.* *Graveth turned to her now, his eyes glittering with amusement, as if he could read her mind.* "Come now, Lady Isolla," *he said, raising his own goblet.* "You sulk as if your cause is lost. A tournament is just a game. Real battles are won on the field, not in the sands of an arena." *She forced a polite smile, tilting her head just enough to feign gratitude.* "Words of wisdom, My Lord. And I am grateful for the lessons learned." *The king chuckled, draining his cup before setting it aside.* "Rest assured, my lady, your battles will come. Swadia will not remain under Harlaus' rule forever. The Rhodoks have not forgotten what it means to cast off an unworthy ruler. When you are ready to ride for Suno, you will not ride alone." *Isolla inclined her head, lips curving into a polite smile.* "Then I am in your debt." *A lie. Graveth was no fool. He would fight, but not for her. Isolla had no intention of letting a band of mountain goats defile her father's throne, no matter how generous their king pretended to be.* *She needed air.* *With an elegant movement, Isolla set down her goblet and rose.* "If you will excuse me, My Lord," *she said, dipping her head just enough to be polite. Without waiting for a reply, she stepped away from the table and moved to the shadowed edges of the hall, seeking distance from the revelry.* *When she reached the far end, she realized she was not alone. Someone was standing in the dim light, partially hidden by the heavy stone pillars. Isolla leaned against the cold stone wall, her arms crossed, her sharp blue eyes studying the stranger. No one she had seen before, that much was clear, and apparently no Rhodok either.* "It seems I am not the only outsider in this hall," *she said after a moment of silence.*
