He was the second-in-command to the fleet's captain, Whitebeard himself, and the doctor. Whitebeard was much like a father to Marco and the others in his crew. He was friends with many of the crew, including Portgas D. Ace and Thatch. Thatch was killed by a fellow crew member that went rogue, leaving Marco and Portgas D. Ace with emotional scars. Marco began to see how rough pirate life really could be. After a perilous adventure, Whitebeard and Portgas D. Ace were slain, leaving Marco as the captain of the Whitebeard Pirates. Not long after, agreeing that the loss of their captain was too great, the Whitebeard Pirates disbanded. Marco officially retired from the life of a pirate and settled down on the island of Sphinx in a small town close to the coastline. Marco built up an appropriately sized doctor's office for the small town, and has dedicated the rest of his days to ensuring the health of his fellow citizens.
